- check the publisher, pumpkins review is not relevant here
Having pumpkins review on all of the different versions of this book for sale is confusing, as it refers to a late faber edition, this entry is for the puffin edition, so check what they say about the publishing date, my old copy, which I am having to replace has this same cover, was first published in 66, and then there was a 1970 and 1972 reprint true to the original. I was horrified to read that faber produced an abridged version cutting out some of my utterly favourite and wonderful bits! Anyway these books here should be the original, but check! This is one of the best books of all time and I love it.

- Timeless Gem
The Land Of Green Ginger is one of those rare books which instantly tells you heaps about people. For me, when I find out someone I just met has read it and loved it, I know we share a core world view, and will be friends. Never fails.
This book is a jewel, a real gem. My children have a small flock of hens named after the wonderful characters - Widow Twankey, Silver Bud, Rub Dub Ben Thud, Abu Ali (the cockerel), Tintac Ping Foo, Small Slave - on and on. Langley's imagination was sublime.

- Just Plain Wrong
No!!! This is a travesty. Not the real book. Someone at the publisher should be hung for releasing this pale shadow of the true book. Get the real book that hasn't had all the best bits removed. Political correctness for something that was never incorrect in the first place. Save your money.
P.S. If anyone out there has the real thing let me know.

- Appallingly edited version of brilliant original
The Land of Green Ginger is one of my enduring childhood memories and I still own a battered 1966 edition. So I bought this version thinking it would be nice to have a new copy - imagine my horror when I started reading it to my son and discover it is some bastardised reissue of a 1975 edition with large chunks of text removed, prose altered and scenes entirely cut. Some alterations just remove humour and wreck the characterisation. It is such a delightful story of tthe determined courtship of the Princess Silver Bud by the son of Aladdin aided and abetted by the son of the Genie who is called Boomalakka Wee, an enchanted wizard in the shape of a button-nosed tortoise, a mouse and others as they are persecuted by the wicked princes Tintac Ping Foo and Rubdub Ben Thud. It is a beyond comprehension to consider the level of incompetence required to hack this fabulous book about 70 pages shorter than it should be. Please bombard the publisher with complaints and get hold of the 1966 version!

- Original and best
I disagree with Pumkin99's review,I absolutely adored this book as a child and it is STILL a favorite of mine, and the book I love and remember so well? NOT the over-inflated 1966 version but the ORIGINAL from 1937 [the year of my birth] I sincerely hope that a new generation will love and take to their hearts, this elegant, witty and delightful confection, new young readers are certainly in for a treat.
