- Seriously Amaizing
I bought this book to read as and when travelling and read the whole thing in three days. I was away for a weekend in Paris with my better half and just could not put this book down. This book is well written, contains heartfelt emotion and is sad but so moving. Im about to buy the kite runner now as I cant wait to read it.

- A different perspective on wars
Probably the best book I have ever read, reduced me to absolute sobbing at the end.

- A lasting testimony of a world we struggle to imagine
Hosseini manages the impressive feat of transporting us in the everyday life of one of Earth's most remote, and yet so much discussed country. His tale of two women is riveting. I read A thousand splendid suns after the kite runner, and much preferred this one, I guess because of its focus on domestic life and on woman's condition in a region we often know so little about.

- Wonderful story
A great story that had me turning pages long after I should have finished reading for the night! The author has a gift for telling stories featuring characters that make you care what happens to them - not as easy to do as some writers seem to think.
Although this book is set in Afghanistan and gives glimpses of that country's history over the past forty years, it is really a personal story about people, not a tale of history, nation and religion. The careful reader will see that the women in this book are treated poorly by men, not religion - I think this is a point worth making after reading some reviews referring to the plight of the characters 'under Islam'. I did not gain this impression, if anything the women are comforted by their faith and not repressed by it.
I don't particularly agree with the reviews here about this being a sweeping story of Afghanistan. Yes, elements of history are touched on, but I would not recommend this book for someone wanting to learn a bit more about the culture or the country as it is by no means an 'eyewitness to history' sort of novel.
What "A Thousand Splendid Suns" is, though, is a great tale written by an author with a true talent for story-telling. I read a great deal of fiction but am rarely moved by it. I'm pleased to say that this book was an exception.

- Moving, heartbreaking and utterly convincing
This is the story of two very different women whose lives collide when they marry the same man. It explores themes of family, relationships, suffering, sacrifice, friendship, love, and loss across three different generations of Afghani women.
The characterisation is fantastic; both women are very distinct from each other and their different coping mechanisms and reactions lend an amazing authenticity. The magic of this novel is in these two characters, their development over the course of the novel, and their interactions with each other. Individually and together they try to overcome the many hardships which have befallen them, hardships they have no choice but to bear, and I was moved by each and every struggle.
This novel has the parallels of the human struggle each woman is facing as an individual and as a gender, alongside the changing face of Afghanistan over decades of war and turmoil. It is an emotional rollercoaster and a haunting story, one that will stay with you for a long time.
I was completely enthralled by this story, and would thoroughly recommend it.
