Rating: 5 of out 5 - A thousand splendid suns

Perhaps the best book I have read for several years. Harrowing and incisive and yet so informative as to the woman's plight in a Taliban world - it was difficult to put down. The last few pages were particularly sad. This is writing at its most heartfelt and the surprisingly it was written by an Afghan male who still has an incredible pride for his country even though he has lived in America for so long. The writing of such a book and the way it can influence so many of us is invaluable. I have recommended it to everyone of my friends each of whom, after reading it, has been overwhelmed by it's message.

Rating: 3 of out 5 - Depressing, but sticks in your mind

I found this book to be slightly depressing, as many of the books on this region tends to be. It is well written, and it did stick in my mind, but I wouldn't re-read it. If you are interested in Afghanistan though, and if you enjoyed the Kite Runner, this is one to read too.

Rating: 5 of out 5 - A Thousand Splendid Suns by Khaled Hosseini

I would have to argue that this is one of the best books I have ever read and the first book that has left me in tears at the end.

The story is beautifully written throughout and chronicles the lives of Mariam and Laila; two Afghan women from different backgrounds who are brought together under tragic circumstances. I liked how Hosseini structured this book, by first dedicating a part of the book to each character, and then when brought together, telling the story from the perspective of each in turn. Also, interwoven throughout the novel are political incidents which have profound impacts on the lives of the characters involved. The later chapters of which deal with events witnessed in my own lifetime; the destruction of the Bamiyan Buddha's and the terrorist attacks in New York. This gave me a sense of the suffering that that these two women could very well have been facing during my own lifetime, which was both thought provoking and profound.

This is a story of loss, acceptance, friendship, sacrifice, hope and love marred by a backdrop of violence, both socially and politically. At times the violence and repression that these two women, and indeed other characters, endure is harrowing, but its through this violence that the most heartwarming of friendships blossom. To me the ending really brought about a sense of both tragedy and triumph.

A thought provoking book that made me grateful for what I have and who I am and one that will stay with me for a long time after.

Rating: 5 of out 5 - Seriously Amaizing

I bought this book to read as and when travelling and read the whole thing in three days. I was away for a weekend in Paris with my better half and just could not put this book down. This book is well written, contains heartfelt emotion and is sad but so moving. Im about to buy the kite runner now as I cant wait to read it.

Rating: 5 of out 5 - A different perspective on wars

Probably the best book I have ever read, reduced me to absolute sobbing at the end.
