This is a really good read, it has lasted the passage of time and is as fresh as when it was written. I think it would appeal to all ages .It is a classic!

- Should have quit while it was ahead
I remember this book being better than it actually is; I bought it from Amazon and re-read it and the memories came flooding back. However, I had forgotten how unnecessarily long it is, and after the initial humour and enjoyment of the illustrations has worn off (about half way through), it becomes pretty dull and repetitive.

- FATTYPUFFS AND THINIFERS
An eternal classic by the classic French author, Andre Maurois, it is the story of two brothers who find an underground land one day, divided into two countries, one belonging to the Fattypuffs, who enjoy an hourly snack and an hourly nap, and the other to the Thinifers, who eat to live and work most of the time. The brothers, being one of each kind, are sent off to the different countries, and they have to live through the dreadful war, caused by each country's conviction that their way of life is best. After suffering, the question is resolved happily. The excellent illustrations add to the tale's wit and humanity.

Fritz Wegner's deliciously funny and beguiling illustrations are unforgettable, and more than do justice to this excellent story. This edition also includes a very witty and enjoyable written introduction by Raymond Briggs, though none of his illustrations. A book to treasure.

- So - which one are you?
As a 'Thinnifer' child I empathised totally with the 'Fattypuffs' and loved their comfortable laid back lifestyle and the fact that they got to eat six square meals a day with light snacks in between and didn't give a damn about their weight. Now who wouldn't envy that?! This book hasn't dated and I am enjoying reading it to my own children now that I'm a 'Thinnipuff' or a 'Fattifer' adult - depending on your point of view. As it points out in an introduction that I think has been added since I used to read it as a child, this book also has some strong points to make about tolerance which are very important in this troubled world.
