Rating: 4 of out 5 - A Wee Fun Read

A great fan of the Discworld series, I decided to branch out into other Terry Pratchett genres, namely his children's fiction. I had read 'The Bromeliad' which I thoroughly enjoyed and then noticed 'The Wee Free Men' on a dusty shelf. Although it is a children's book, my expectations were still high and I must say I was not disappointed. This is another Discworld novel, but the place where the book is set seems so remote from anything Discwordly I know, it could almost pass for a corner of Wales. Except, of course, for witches, headless horsemen, an evil queen, a talking toad and blue, Scottish creatures called the Nac Mac Feegles (and the eponymous characters of the book).

The book is set on 'The Chalk' where the main character, Tiffany Aching, lives. Tiffany is a nine-year old girl who helps out on her parents' farm and has magical tendencies. When her brother is 'stolen', these skills are truly put to the test, and Tiffany embarks on a nightmarish adventure, with the help of the Wee Free Men, to find her brother. The story moves between The Chalk and Fairyland where dreams and nightmares can come true. Fairyland is not like the Fairyland of our childhood stories, nor of Tiffany's, and Pratchett really lets his imagination run wild to create a land that none of us would want to visit!

Although primarily a children's book, 'The Wee Free Men' works well enough on many levels to make it attractive to adults. Tiffany asks the questions that many of us older readers would, too. Who are we, what are we doing, what is the right thing or the brave thing to do? Quite abstract in parts, it is well worth a read and there is a nice touch of the more familiar Discworld at the end with the brief appearance of a favourite character from some of the other novels!

Rating: 5 of out 5 - It's for keeps!

This book was amazing. Not having read any of the Discworld series before, I wasn't sure whether I should be reading The Wee Free Men as a fully grown woman or whether it was a teen novel. However, I don't care! This book came everywhere with me as I just could not put it down. It was really nice to have a book which I could read, enjoy, and then pass on to my ten year old son for him to do the same. I encourage all adults to indulge in this fantasy world every once in a while, it'll make you smile and it really is good for the soul.

Rating: 5 of out 5 - "The Wee Free Men", by Terry Pratchett

This is a wonderful story from the Discworld, full of the magic, wit and wisdom of Terry Pratchett, making it delightful reading for adults and children alike. Wise beyond her years and gradually becoming aware of her own magical powers, young Tiffany Aching locks horns with the wicked Queen of Fairyland who has stolen her little brother, and encounters dangers from which she is lucky to escape with the aid of the delightfully naughty Wee Free Men. I have read this book with huge enjoyment and cannot recommend it highly enough for readers of all ages.

Rating: 5 of out 5 - Terry Pratchet The Wee Free Men

Another great title fromTerry, although aimed at the childrens market this book is thoroughly entertaining and complements the disc World novels. Highly recommended.
