Average rating - 4.5 out of 5

Rating: 4 of out 5 - Classic book

Highly enjoyable memoir told in exquisite language that perfectly evokes the place and time. The descriptions could be not be more delightful and the tales of folk from that period are extraordinary, sometimes funny, sometimes sad.
Definitely worth reading to see how only a very short time ago people lived very differently to us. Some of the living was better, some of it was worse. Teenagers reading it will be shocked by much of what it describes. In that sense, it is a book to expand the mind, and a valuable one.

Rating: 5 of out 5 - Poetical and evocative

Singulary the most beautiful, eloquent and poignant book I have ever read. More a poem to a lost age. The first page alone is a masterpiece of descriptive writing and draws you in like a moth to a candle of smells and sounds of English country-life in its dying embers, a life about to face the onset of modernity.

I cannot believe that it took me 46 years to 'discover' the beauty this books contains and feel robbed that I never encountered this work during my education.. I was aware of its title but had not concept of what it described.

You simply must read this utterly beautiful ode to childhood.

Rating: 5 of out 5 - Beautifully written

The descriptive passages in the book are a veritable feast for all the senses. Lee's book transports you to his childhood with wonderfully recorded memories and experiences leaving you disappointed when the book comes to an end. Highly recommended.

Rating: 5 of out 5 - A classic memoir

Although Laurie Lee preferred to write poetry, he is best known for his prose: the trilogy of memoirs he wrote late in his life. "Cider with Rosie" is the first, detailing his childhood from the time he moves into his Gloucestershire home to just before he leaves to seek his fortune. His prose is extremely lyrical, especially when describing nature, his beloved mother and his three older half-sisters. Apart from the quality of the writing, "Cider with Rosie" should be read for the poetic descriptions of an England with few motorcars "where the horse was still king", agricultural communities that were able to function independently and hardly any interference from "the outside world".

Rating: 5 of out 5 - Cider with Rosie

This is a beautiful book, with a wondefully moving story. The innocene and naivity of little Laurie Lee is very indeering. If you like to Kill a Mockingbird, you will love this.
