- Romantic, nostalgic, irresistable.
I have loved this book since i was made to read it at school in the 5th form. Laurie Lee gives a vividly romantic and nostalgic account of his childhood growing up in Gloucestershire in the early half of the 20th century.
I've probably re-read this book more times than any other. This lyrical, moving, funny, sharply observed and beautifully poetic account of his formative years from snot-nosed schoolboy to the impassioned adolescent seems both to record and define a particular time and place in Engish history. Perhaps it never existed at all, but he makes you passionately believe and indeed wish it had have been so...

- Don't let it being a GCSE title put you off! A Quality Read.
I was more than a little apprehensive about reading 'Cider with Rosie'. To everyone I mentioned that I had chosen this as one of my books for holiday reading they always said 'Oh! I read that for GCSE!'. If thats not enough to put anyone off.... However, I brought it to the beach and really loved it! I now know why it is a classic!
It follows the story of the young Laurie Lee. The writing is so descriptive and evocative you can almost imagine you are there! Don't let the GCSE text recommendation put you off! Read it!!!

- A pickling jar full of a lost England
Cider with Rosie (the first in Laurie Lee's autobiographical trilogy) is vibrant, beautiful and endearing. In it Lee writes movingly, humourously and poignantly about his childhood in rural Gloucestershire during and after the first world war. From toddler to teenager we follow the young Laurie, his affectionate older half-sisters, his eccentric and lovable mother and his quiet, peaceful, shocking village through the final years of rural inoocence before the twentieth century crushed it all under its jack-boot.
After having read this book you will want to read more Lee, but also visit the Slad valley, whose landscape, places and customs Lee has enthralled you with and whose spirit pervaids this work.

- A sensitively written book with lots of vivid description.
Laurie Lee's 'Cider with Rosie' is a lively yet sensitively written collection of childhood events. The people, settings and stories are shown both from a child's point of view, and the point of view of an adult looking back on their childhood.
I enjoyed reading this book, and the vivid and magical descriptions made me feel part of Laurie Lee's childhood and adolesence. In my opinion, 'Cider with Rosie' is a book to be enjoyed by anyone, whatever their age.

- lovely sentimental story
This is a warm evocative tale of growing up in the cotswolds around the time of the first world war. The opening page is a bit like chewing concrete with its over flowery descriptions, but stick with it because the rest of the book just flows. It tells the tale of Laurie growing up in a large family with only his mother for guidance. Their father has left them and his wonderful scatty mother has trouble coping, but the story is warm and amusing, and brutal by turns. The characters are all enchanting and once I began this book I did not put it down until I had finished it, and then promptly turned back to page one and read it all again! Definately one of my favorite books ( even though it mysteriously bears many similarities to Flora Thompson's "Larkrise to Candleford" Hmmm....
