- A truly rivetting read
This novel, which forms part of the 'Regeneration Trilogy' is a harrowing, yet reflective read on the Great War. As a student of Modern History the author uses a balance of fact (the meeting between Owen and Sassoon, two of the greatest poets of the War, at Craiglockart Hospital, and their encounter with Dr W Rivers) and fiction, to demonstrate the horror of the First World War.
I learnt more from this book than I did from many set texts. A truly rivetting read from cover to cover. As are the further two novels which make up the trilogy.
Rating:
- subtly insightful
This book is not only easy to read and refreshing from many works covering WW1, it challenges our perception of the horrors of war. On the surface it is a story about the soldier poets, namely Sassoon and Owen, but it is also about so much more - relationships, class divisions and the process of regeneration.
Superbly written, this book will blow you away. A great and accessible read... highly recommended!
Rating:
- A very good read
I found this book amazing. It was a great insight to the horrors of WWI whilst also demonstrating the human side of the suffering. I found Rivers absolutely fascinating as was the relationship between Sasson and Owen.
However, I found this book the best in the trilogy, the next book is almost not worth the read.
Rating:
- Fantastic!
This is definately my favourite book! From the minute i picked it up, i did not want to put it down. I was surprised by its content and found it utterly compelling. It is one of the lighter war literature reads, which seemed somewhat refreshing. The characters were fantastically developed and i found myself particularly drawn to Billy Prior. The sessions between Rivers and all his patients were entertaining, yet touching.
All in all this is an incredible book and i can not wait to read the rest of the trilogy!

- I can't wait to read the next in the trilogy!
This book is the best I have read in a long time. I read this as part of my A-level English Literature course on World War One. This was the best novel I read by far and I cannot wait to read the rest of the trilogy. This will appeal to anyone who is interested in the war, but also to anyone who enjoys an interesting plot which twists and turns. Pat Barker brilliantly mixes real WW1 characters with imaginary ones to produce a vivid and accurate WW1 story based around the mental hospital Craiglockhart. You can almost imagine you are there seeing it! Well worth the money and I can't wait to read the other 2 in the series.
