Average rating - 4.0 out of 5

Rating: 5 of out 5 - eye-opening

'Regeneration' differs to the expected style of war literature by avoiding physically intense situations and focussing on their consequences. Pat Barker's main concerns are the psychological issues related to the actual events that form the basis of typical war novels. Barker enlightens the reader to social aspects and pressures of wartime, mainly the national ignorance to Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. Pat Barker shocks the reader into understanding the reality of trench warfare in a way that no other author manages by using powerful linguistic techniques. The significant link between the fact and the fiction adds extra validity to the novel and reinforces the attitudes held, in particular those of the war poet Siegfried Sassoon.

Rating: 4 of out 5 - A very well reseached book that covers many elements

Regeneration is the start of a brilliant and compelling trilogy. Set in the infamous Craiglockhart World War One hospital, Barker gives details on both patients and the doctor Rivers. The blend of fiction and fact serve to make it even more interesting and moving. Together the three novels give a very good overview of WW1, focussing on the people 'at home' and a selection of Craiglockhart's patients

Rating: 5 of out 5 - amazing book truely a great work of art

pat barker really gets under the skin of her characters making your general compassion towards them simply brilliant. you feel as though you really know the indevidual characters such as rivers, prior, sassoon etc and are able to become a part of their world

Rating: 5 of out 5 - a fascinating psychological insight into the minds of men

i couldn't help wondering if this novel was written as a reply to ts eliot's wasteland. there were several similarites and echoes. the way it depicted the horrors of world war one was graphic yet not gratuitous. while i was reading this book i could talk of little else, it was the most fascinating insight into the minds of men i have ever read, hard to believe the author was female!! a brilliant thought-provoking book i would recommend to anyone

Rating: 4 of out 5 - Fact and Fiction merge, but to good effect

I will not delude you, I did not pick up this book by choice. I am doing a degree in literature and Regeneration was on my reading list and I have only just recently finished reading it. Now with many English Lit books you will find that they are either exceptionally obscure or wonderfully insightful, thankfully Regeneration was the latter of the two.

The novel certainly is an interesting read although it is somewhat of a difficult read so don't approach it with a light heart as it does demand attention. Once you get past the overly dominating writing style of Pat Barker you are immerged into a blend of war documentation and fiction.

Set in a Psychological rehabilitation centre during the first World War, Regeneration is a frightening and realistic look into what the war was really like and the many lives and minds that it was able to destroy.

I would not recommend this novel to eccentrics that find their reading pleasure in spy and action novels as this is far from it. In fact you will very likely end up a pacifist at the end page.
