This set of 4 CD's is a complete recording of the third book in the Narnia series. Beautifully read, it leads the listener into the magical world of Narnia and Aslan. Rating: 5 of out 5 - A pleasure to listen to

This set of 4 cd's is the third book in the Narnia series. Beautifully read, the reader Alex Jennings, captures the true feeling of Narnia and brings the listener into the magical world of Aslan.
A wonderful story, beautifully read, a must-have for all those who like good quality childrens' stories and for adults who still have their childhood fantasy alive!

Rating: 5 of out 5 - this book is NOT racist

I would like to start by saying that this is one of the few children's novels in which the boy and girl are equal. Aravis is, in fact, the better rider and pretty snooty towards the hero, Shasta, a boy on the run with a talking horse, Bree, from Narnia. To reach it they have to get through the capital of Calormene, and across a burning desert in a race against time...
Set during the Golden Age of Narnia, when the four Pevensie children who found their way into it in The Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe have grown up, this is a pony tale with many extras. It starts quite slowly, and my seven-year-old got bored reading it to himself - the chapter where Aravis describes her escape from a forced marriage is written in ornata, archaic language some children will have difficulty with. However, it is a thrilling tale, and once the race across the desert begins it is irresistible. Lewis writes so vividly you feel you're there in the saddle; and the comedy once Shasta actually arrives and has to fight in his first battle is very well done. What this book dramatises and upholds are universal values: loyalty, friedship, courage, truthfulness and perseverance.

Rating: 5 of out 5 - I love this book!

Young Shasta grew up in Calormen, but always felt a drawing towards the north. When a nobleman rides up one day, and begins negotiating with Shasta's father to buy him, he learns that he is really a foundling from Narnia. Shasta wants to escape, and opportunity presents itself, when the nobleman's horse begins to talk to him! It seems that Bree was also stolen away from Narnia, so the two form an alliance and head north. But there are many adventures and surprises along the way. Plus, it seems that somebody has their eye on Shasta!

I love this book! I gather that there is some disagreement as to the order in which you should read the Chronicles of Narnia, but this one is well placed at #3, falling as it does during the later stages of the High-Kingship of Peter. This book has a wonderful Arabian Nights feel to most of it, and it is filled with adventure and suspense. I enjoyed reading this book to my children, and they enjoyed hearing it. We all recommend this book to you!

Rating: 4 of out 5 - A magical story that will thrill young and old.

The story line constantly moves the characters from one colourful, exotic scene to another. Expanding on events in earlier Narnia tales this story links in very well, however the interpretation given also allows this tale to stand alone, and will entrance listeners regardless of whether they have encountered other Narnia adventures or not. A magical story that will thrill young and old.
