- Pleasant Surprise
Having heard about this book i decided to buy it. It definately displays a unique charm. I like the Harry Potter books and this is like a darker, funnier, cruder version. The writing isn't as good as JK Rowling's but it's still gripping. The author's use of crude humour, easy jokes, and poking fun at itself makes it hilarious. The plot is fast paced, and sometimes hard to follow, with sudden twists. Although sometimes it seems to exert too much effort to win laughs it is a good, well-worth read. It is way funnier than Harry Potter and some could argue better. More aimed at older readers though but if you like parodies or Harry Potter, or if you hate Harry Potter from his stupid scar to his pet owl's droppings, you should read this funny book. Read about Barry's quest to stop a film about him being made with help from Ermine and Lon who suffered a tragic Quiddet accident, resulting in him having half a Labrador's brain. Ruder, cruder, funnier, darker.

I would recomend Barry Trotter and the Shameless Parody for any age group. It is an excellent book about a man called Barry Trotter who is 30 (going on 13) and his wife Ermonie Gringer. Micheal Gerber uses some great phrases through the book. For the price it is an excellent buy and I think anyone with a sense of humour would enjoy it. I found Harry Potter boring and I decided that Barry Trotter was more humorous and interesting.

- Shameless indeed!
As a big Harry Potter fan I thought I would give this a try. It is certainly different, and some parts of it are very clever. The concept of Marketors (rather than Dementors) making Barry collapse because they feed off his trademark identity rather than his soul is excellent, and I loved Ermine's spell that created ten pounds of unslimmable cellulite to appear on someones hips! As for this book it's one or those that you either like or really despise, I'm afraid to say I liked it! It really is a 'shameless parody' indeed!

- Bilge
Complete bilge - Gerber is clearly trying so hard to make a quick buck that he falls over himself in his study of parody.
When a reader wishes to be amused by such a spoof (and there ARE some funny bits to it) the craft of the spoof should be consistent with the original and the simple fact is that he cannot write as well as J K Rowling.
I gave up half way through, something I've never done before.

- Trotter better than Potter?
Barry is a truely brilliant book. It has an excellant humour, that portrays the funnier side of the original book. As a fan of the Harry Potter books, I found that Barry Trotter fantastic, with Bumblemore a personal highlight. But I found that a knowledge of the original books is essential before picking up any Barry Trotter book.
