- WORTH THE EFFORT
If you want a long and absorbing read for the coming winter, you should consider this epic from Sholokhov. The Don and the steppe provide the backdrop to the Russian civil war from the Cossack perspective. Family divisions, bitter fighting, romance and a way of life about to change forever make this a novel to stand with Tolstoy and Pasternak.
Rating:
- Not War and Peace
Tolstoy this isn't but it reads like a 19th century novel. The Russian civil war seen from the Cossack viewpoint. The mighty Don is the backdrop to war, love rivalries, family bickerings and a way of life changing out of all recognition. Settle down by the fire for a hefty winter read.
Rating:
- A novel of the Don Cossacks at the time of the Revolution
This was the best book that I have ever read so far. Sholokhov's talent for bluntly stating the facts makes every situation all the more worthy of the feelings they provoke. Each character lives, breathes, laughs, crys, right before your very eyes. An intriguing book!
