- A beautifully written and moving tale of life in Afghanistan
I delayed reading this book for a long time as someone had told me it was more brutal and depressing than The Kite Runner, and frankly, I did not wish to be depressed or traumatised. The story certainly is brutal in places, but it is so beautifully written and told in such a moving and understated way that the atmosphere is conjured up without having to spell out the horrors of the treatment of the women. A "must read" for anyone who wants to understand Afghanistan, or who just likes a well-written story. I agree with other reviewers that it is even better than the Kite Runner. A Thousand Splendid Suns is literature at its best.

- AMAZING!
Ok, I thought The Kite Runner was amazing...but A Thousand Splendid Suns is AMAZING! Hands down, better than The Kite Runner, and by a long way, that's saying something. The Kite Runner is from a male characters perspective, A Thousand Splendid Suns is from female characters perspective, and is really insightful, interesting, touching, and an emotional rollercoaster. No need for this review to go into detail about the plot, or for it to be lengthy, I'm sure there are hundred of those reviews that precede mine.
All I need to say is that this is easily my favorite book so far, and picking up another is going to be difficult for a while. If you haven't read it, get hold of it asap! Hosseini is fantastic writer, has a great style of writing, and paints an extremely graphic picture of the surroundings and events. 5/5 no questions ask.

- Read this book!
What struck me was that this is set in my life time, someone who was born about the same time as me, we all have ideas about what we hear on the news and read in the paper, this story puts the meat on the bones of what we think we know. A stop and think book!

- An Afghan Dickens' Story
I gobbled this book in approximately 12 hours. If I had no social life these 12 hours would have been just straight through.
Many where the emotions that Khaled Hosseini conveyed me. What was constant was the angriness that I felt as a woman for the suffering and injustice Afghan women have to succumb to. If it was not for the ability of Hosseini to make me yearn for more I would have tossed the book away after a few chapters because I can't stand feeling powerless in front of all this anguish.
Through Hosseini's writing I've learnt more about Afghan people and their sufferings. What is compelling about this book is the extent with which emotions are dealt with, flooding one's heart as a thousand splendid suns would.
Simple and straight forward this book leads you with a fervent pace in a life we nowadays western cultured women can only imagine and recall via history books while ardently hope that one day not far away all women need not endure any more.

- captivating
this extraordinary books paints the picture of 2 afghani women, who, when put in an awful situation, fight to stay alive. the books gives us an insight into what life was really like for women, and the general population of afghanistan under taliban rule.
the book is heart rendering and tear jerkingly good. When i first picked it up, it seemed long, but as soon as i started reading, i wasnt able to put it down.
