A Thousand Splendid Suns by Khaled Hosseini

There were mixed views and feelings about this book. Several felt that it was well written and informative about the lives of women in Afghanistan whilst others thought the characters lacked depth, appearing rather two-dimensional, and that the narrative turned sometimes into a polemic with characters that were not developed sufficiently to survive the changing times in Afghanistan.

In contrast to the Kite Runner, an earlier book by the same author, this was written whilst the author was settled in America, so presented a perspective from outside the country on the lives of women during the occupation of Afghanistan by the Russians and the Taliban. It was felt that this view from America influenced the storylines, to the extent that it delivered a happy ending for one of the women at least. Several readers were confused by the events during the different occupations and were not clear which group was in occupation at the various times.

It was an ambitious task for a male author to write about the horror of women's lives in Afghanistan under the various repressive regimes and some in the group felt that the lack of detail about the women's lives in the book was because of a male author's difficulty in identifing with the lives of women in this situation.

The group did agree however that this book was a good and enjoyable read.

There's not much left to say that hasn't already been said by other reviewers on here I'm sure.

BUY IT, READ IT, FALL IN LOVE WITH IT.

If you've read the kite runner and unsure if this book is as good or different enough - it is. Always keeps you interested, the pace of the story is good with interesting characters. Well worth a read.

An excellent & compelling read. The best book I've ever read. Can't rate it highly enough. Reading about the lives of women in Afghanistan under the Taliban regime really gives you something to think about and a lot to be grateful for.

I am an avid book reader and I will not spoil the story, I wish to tell you that this is incredible in every semse and just cannot believe that anyone gave it anything less than 5 stars - AMAZING - buy this book.
