- An enthralling account of a little-remembered battle
I probably would not have bought this book had I not - literally - tripped over a pile stacked by the door of the book shop. But when I started to flick through, I was immediately captured, not only by the account of an important event in Pan-European history that is rarely taught these days, but even more so, by the author's immensely engaging and fluid style. He manages to pull off the trick of presenting a scholarly account as an adventure thriller. I had serious problems putting it down - and I'm far more of a Rankin/Grisham reader than a history buff. Never preachy, Spencer nevertheless places the Battle of Blenheim in its true historical context and, at the same time, serves up his readers with a brace of truly admirable historical heroes - Marlborough and Prince Eugene of Savoy.
I have already ordered The Spencer Family - and can't wait to get stuck in.
