Rating: - Patience rewarded...eventually

Initially impenetrable, this novel - something like the fifth in the Culture series - gradually reveals its satisfying secrets and conspiracies. Alongside the grand space opera there is an absorbing and intimate human story, but really this book is about the minds that are the Culture's spaceships, and how they plot and scheme on an unimaginable level. I feel Banks' obfuscation at the start of the book is largely unnecessary. It's a frustrating first hunderd pages. Although ultimately this is a rewarding book, many won't finish it I suspect.

Reading the other reviews here, I suspect I am going to be in a minority in prefering 'Use of Weapons'.

Rating: - Interesting use of language ...

Having just completed reading this, the first Banks book I have read, I can say I greatly enjoyed it (though I'm with those would have liked more insight into what the excession actually was). I am left with one question, though, that I'd love to put to the author if ever I got the chance. At all levels of the Culture they seem to swear an awful lot. Why might that be?

Excellent novel, though could do with a list of players a la a non-space opera!

Great book and a great read... I've loved all his novels, you can't go wrong. Sit back and enjyoy.

Rating: - Cementing the Culture

This book fleshes out the Culture more than any other Ian M Banks novel.

I loved the way that the immensely powerful Minds (machine intelligences) dominated the plot - So human, yet absolutely alien.

The sense of scale and scope of a society capable of dominating huge tracks of the known universe is portrayed like no other author can.
