Editorial Review

Music from the OC Mix 1 is strangely unique for a TV soundtrack compilation. Often, US teen dramas don't put a great deal of thought into the show's music, relying heavily on bland, melodramatic MOR (think Paula Cole and Dawson's Creek). However, a glance through the track listing reveals a host of acclaimed indie guitar bands from around the world. Goodtime retro acts such as Jet ("Move On") and the Dandy Warhols ("We Used to be Friends") in addition to more downbeat artists such as Turin Brakes ("Rain City"), South ("Paint the Silence") and the Doves ("Caught By the Rain") make for an eclectic mix of new music. Music from the OC Mix 1 serves well as the soundtrack to a hit show but more importantly, it's a great introduction to good bands who many may not have been discovered without it. --David Trueman

Rating: 5 of out 5 - An Unexpected Joy

Watching through the box sets of The OC, it quickly became evident that the creators had paid a great deal of attention to the music that was accompanying the episodes, so the mixes that they have produced to go with it soon caught my attention. They have done just as good a job with this, the first of 6 albums that were put out.

It contains the theme tune, California by Phantom Planet along with eleven other very good tracks by various indie bands with highlights (for me at least) of Just A Ride and Dice.

The album works very well on its own and as an introduction to the various artists if you haven't heard of them before. Highly recommended.

Rating: 2 of out 5 - one good song

I bought this cd because I liked track number 10 "Dice" when I heard it played on the OC tv programme, though I can't say that I'll remember anything on this cd apart from "Dice" in ten years time. And I found that I got fed up listening to this cd after a few days - the music sounds old-fashioned (reminds me of the 1960s for some reason),the guitar music was awful on some tracks - no clear individual notes or chords (these dudes and dudettes aren't Mark Knopfler playing Sultans of Swing or Romeo and Juliette, for example). If this is the best mix from the OC I would advise people to steer clear of the others. And don't let the poor quality of the music on this cd detract you from buying the DVDs of the tv programme which is as good as people say it is.

Rating: 5 of out 5 - My FAVE Mix!

Out of all the mixes, this is still the first, and best, of them all! I think the cd works because of the flow between tracks, and the mix of downbeat and upbeat music. The other mixes, excluding 3 as its a chrismukkah mix, have been a lot more downbeat and the tracks tend to blend into one another. My fave tracks from this cd are Spoon- 'Thats the way we get by' (i think this would make an excellent tv theme tune) and South-'Paint the silence' (beautiful title, even better song!) Highly recommended both to fans of The O.C and Indie music fans!

Rating: 5 of out 5 - Unexpected from a teen series

This album is excellent. It took a few listens to grow on me but now I can highlight the standout tracks for recommendation; these are definitley: Dice Finley Quaye, extremley atmospheric and a great voice. Danady Warhols we used to be friends, very upbeat and catchy. South paint the silence, always reminds me of the episode when the house burnt down, and not to mention a very catchy song. All songs are listenable, the only ones I don't like are Jem just a ride and orange sky Alexi Murdoch. But all in all definitley worth buying.
