Editorial Review

The work of Jane Austen is being confidently mined by filmmakers at the moment, and Persuasion is the latest to be visited. And while there are some fair issues raised about just how faithful the film is to the source material, it’s nonetheless a lavish and enjoyable take on Austen’s story, with much to admire.

Much of the reason as to why this version of Persuasion works well lies with its talented cast. Rupert Penry-Jones, for instance, tackles the role of Captain Wentworth with skill, and Sally Hawkins too gives a performance to be admired. Backed by a primarily good supporting cast, the romantic drama is both watchable and engaging.

Inevitably, parallels are going to be drawn with the similarly strong 1995 television adaptation, and the truth is that some will favour one, some will favour the other. For our money, the earlier version just about nudges it, but the two takes on Persuasion both have enough ideas of their own to make them suitable companion pieces.

Diligently directed and suitably lavish to look at, Persuasion then shows little sign of dampening the enthusiasm for bringing Austen to screens of all sizes. And on the basis of the charming 93 minutes on offer here, that’s no bad thing at all. --Jon Foster

Rating: 5 of out 5 - Brilliant

This is just what i needed and it is very useful. Came just as described. Would use again.

Rating: 4 of out 5 - Almost perfect

This is such a lovely adaptation of Persuasion and I really enjoyed it. The only thing I didn't like was how much of the book it left out.
Persuasion is my favourite of Austen's novels and there is so much of the story that is glossed over or taken out entirely. Having said that, it was still very romantic and lovely and I thought the 2 main actors were brilliant.
still love it!

Rating: 3 of out 5 - dizzy camera

This is a feel good film had good costumes and houses but was quite slow. the way the camera continually panned into the main characters face was just strange and the last scene was quite ridiculous as it must be surely be the most slow kiss ever to happen. i was left feeling quite dizzy with the camera movements. Good for a rainy day.

Rating: 3 of out 5 - Entertaining but looks terrible

This was an entertaining adaption and the two main leads did a good job (some of the other actors were frankly poor though) but I have never seen a Jane Austen adaption (or period movie for that matter) that looked so bad. Very weird direction choice at times (the paul greengrass-style at the beginning, and the run in Bath) and the photography was just ugly.

Rating: 1 of out 5 - Beautiful but no substance

I hated this adaptation of the book for its lack of attention to the actual book. Rupert penry Jones was suitably brooding but not a patch on Ciaran Hinds in the role. Locations were beautiful, costumes were accurate, cinematograpy good.....but why mess about with the dialogue in a way which distorts the actual focus of the story. i know its the usual form to insert scenes to spice up the action (I cite Colin Firth in a wet shirt) but this lost the essence of Austens tale.
The ending was too soppy and the kiss incredulously bad!!!

Someone remake this soon with actors who are more than just pretty ornaments!
