Rating: 5 of out 5 - Dark City - Directors cut

This is the second film from the Crow director Alex Proyas and what a great film this is. Easily in my top 50 favourite films, this new directors cut is even better. Re-cut and re-edited, this is the version I wish I'd seen first as the story is even more fleshed out. If you've never seen this film before, I would recommend seeing this version as it really is a treat. If you've already got the film (as I did) I would also recommend getting it for the commentaries and extras that really flesh it out. Of particular interest is the commentary by Mr Roger Ebert, the famous American film critic who really points out points of interest... and I thought I was observant!
A great film finally receiving the release, and praise it deserves

Rating: 5 of out 5 - Really cool movie

A Matrix-meets-Memento-meets-MK-ultra-type' movie (even though Memento and Matrix came later). It will keep you guessing for a long time which is very fun and on top of that it is a very enjoyable movie.

PS It feels like some of the scenes from this movie were copy-and-pasted into The Matrix.

Rating: 4 of out 5 - In Circles

The Amazon editorial review implies this film is all style no substance, but that is untrue. Although a lot of effort went into the style (partly in homage to Fritz Lang's 'Metropolis') the darkness here is no mere plot device, it is a metaphor.

The 'dark city' is an elaborate device created by a soulless race of aliens (who all look like John Gielgud, perhaps because they "use our dead as vessels") as part of a giant experiment to find out what makes humans IRREDUCIBLE (i.e. the part of us that can't be measured or quantified - our souls). 'Dark City' is clearly influenced by Gnostic spirituality, with its concept of a demiurge who has trapped us in a materialistic 'circle of circles'.

The film is tightly scripted and packed together, with extremely fast camera shots (like British show 'The Prisoner', with which it has much in common), and more than one viewing may be necessary to understand the plot in its entirety.

Rating: 5 of out 5 - THE GENIUS STRIKES AGAIN...

...after THE CROW Alex Proyas delivers another visually brilliant film, which is quite clever as well with a very interesting story. If you liked the visuals of THE CROW and like strange yet intersting stories give this one a try.

Rating: 4 of out 5 - Dark City

I'd completely missed this at the cinema and just recently stumbled accross it, and so, unlike other reviewer's, I wasn't aware of the back ground history. The cover art work reminded me of Fritz Lang's Metropolis, from which the film has certainly picked up it's stylistic influences. Although, the influences of films like Blade runner, Brazil and Delcatessen are also very apparent. I'm not sure where The Truman show and The matrix fit in Chronoligically, but if you like the aforementioned films, you'll love this. The storyline isn't fanastically original, but otherwise it's really impressive and enjoyable. The only downside being a completely dim, wooden, and totally unengaging Rufus Sewell. Big eyes and cheekbones doesn't mean you can act...!
