Rating: - Matrix? Sch-matrix!

Without any doubt this movie really plays with your perception of what reality is supposed to be. With the darkness of a 30's detective thriller which just adds to the intelligence, this is one of the most intelligent and complex movies I have seen for a very long time - including The Matrix!

Rating: - Most Philip K. Dick-like film ever

I really loved this film. Strangely it's criticized for being more form than substance. Well yes, the movie is very stylish. And yes, it's a bit of a comic book world, with caricatural protagonists -- the dark city, the sad cop, the beautiful singer, the mad scientist. But far from being a weakness, this is a crucial element of the plot. I won't give it away; let's just say it's quite clever, even breath-taking and paradoxical. Like the Matrix, it was filmed in Australia, and it shares some of that film's (and that country's?) gloomy esthetic and mystical bent, without the fancy martial arts but with a tighter, more original and poetic plot. I haven't seen this film in a few years -- I really want to get the DVD soon!

Rating: - The most original film I've seen in a long, long time

A friend in the US told me about Dark City some 10 months before it finally made its way to these shores. Just from his description it sounded sensational and I managed to get my girlfriend to come and see a film solely on a stranger's recommendation. The film blew us away totally, it's incredibly intelligent, beautifully styled, well written, produced, directed... as someone else has said, watch this then the Matrix and decide which one's more ground breaking!

This film is the most incredibly original and interesting film I have seen in years. It offers a clever plot shown in a dark, gothic format. Watch this film, then reconsider your view on how original the Matrix was...
