Rating: 3 of out 5 - Region 1 DVD w/ Directors Cut is more recommended...

Although badly cut-down from Ridley Scott's original directors cut (which was relased on DVD in America) this handsomely-mounted homage to Cocteau's Beauty & the Beast looks fabulous on this region 2 DVD (which actually boasts a *better* transfer than the otherwise superior region1 DVD).

There's seems to be some confusion regarding the "replacement" of Tangerine Dream's music for Legend. In fact Jerry Goldsmith's score was the one written first. Goldsmith was hired by Ridley Scott, who wanted a traditional, classically-style score to go with his classically-styled farie tale. Goldsmith started writing in pre-production and also wrote the songs and music for the fairy dance scene (which was lamentably cut from all versions of the film).

Goldsmith's music was tossed-out for the American release of the film in favor of something more "pop"-oriented (hence Tangerine Dream's hiring). The Goldsmith score is the one Scott prefers, and Goldsmith's classical European-style score is better suited to this distinctly European fantasy than the 80s pop / Asian-flavored (and hopelessly dated) synth strains of Tangerine Dream.

While this version of the film is closer to Scott's original intentions, I would reccomend the region 1 DVD, which boasts a longer running time and extention of several scenes.

Rating: 5 of out 5 - An Emotion Feast

I first saw this film about 14 or 15 years ago and still love it!!
It is full of myth and magic and contains just about every type of emotion you can think of, joy, evilness, love, despair, you name it! Some young kids may find some scenes a little too sad to cope with, as will some adults(!), but it has to be the best fantasy film that you could ever see. Tim Curry is definitely in one of his best roles of all time, his portrayal of Darkness is superb.
The scenery and sets are so magical that you really do feel as though you are within a world of fairies, elves and goblins!!
From what I read in other reviews I'm glad I don't have this on DVD. Stick to the VHS or CD versions.

Rating: 4 of out 5 - Nearly as good as we remembered

... but the version we rented was missing the Tangerine Dream soundtrack!

Rating: 4 of out 5 - Legend Classic Ridley Scott

This is a fanatsic film from Ridley Scott. As a kid I was both scared and exhilirated by it. Has to be one of the best fantasy films along with Labyrinth. The only thing letting this version down is the lack of Tnagerine Dreams soundtrack, which completes the film as a great piece of work. However there is a DVD available in region 1 which is a ultimate 2 disc edition hopefully coming out on region 2 soon. It has both versions of the film plus loads of extras. A must for all fans and newcomers alike.

Rating: 5 of out 5 - This Film Is A LEGEND!!!

What can you say about a film when the title says it all. This is a classical film with all the myths and fairytale endings you can think off. The actors, demons, unicorns music romance magic and scenes all mend well to make a family classic. This film revovles around myth and magic and is an eye opener for children to watch, This is definatley one of the films you want in every ones DVD collection at home.
