Average rating - 3.5 out of 5

Rating: 4 of out 5 - The critics got it wrong.

When I went to see Star Trek Nemesis at the cinema I went with fairly low expectations - the reviews the film had received were poor to say the least. But I thoroughly enjoyed it. Good story, great special effects, great action sequences and all in all a damned enjoyable way of passing 1 hour and 45 minutes.

But the reviews were dreadful. Had I got it wrong? Were my expectations so low that Nemesis couldn't help but exceed them and prove a pleasant surprise? Would I be disappointed when it came to watching it again on the small screen and realise that my initial impression was wrong - it really wasn't all that good afterall? (another Attack of the Clones?) Had the critics got it right all along?

No. When I got the DVD and found that Paramount had quoted from a review by Paul Ross in the News of the World I admit I was was a bit worried. Was that the only favourable review they could quote from? Paul Ross? I was ready to concede I'd got it all wrong there and then. Having watched the DVD a few times now I have to stand my my initial first impression. Good story, great special effects, great action sequences and a damned enjoyable way of passing 1 hour and 45 minutes.

I won't recount the plot - its been done ably by the other reviewers - though I will add that when the film opens you could be forgiven for thinking you've stumbled across a strange mix of Star Wars: The Phantom Menace (what with all the talk of the Senate, Viceroys, etc.) and Neighbours (Alan "Jim Robinson" Dale crops up as a Romulan who bites the dust!).

Perhaps Nemesis is a bit of a rehash of The Wrath of Khan - but it is still one of the best Next Generation films to have been released and is certainly up there with First Contact. The film does lack some of the genuine humour of Insurrection (though Picard and Data's little exchanges are great). But whereas Insurrection, as good as it was, felt more like an extended episode from the TV series at times, Nemesis not only has the intelligent dialogue/issues you'd expect from Star Trek TNG (ok- there is some technobabble!) it also has the feel of a blockbuster action type movie which can be enjoyed by both Trek and non Trek fans.

DVD extras? There are over 40 minutes worth of interviews with the cast and director, a director's commentary, half a dozen deleted scenes and a gallery of photos and drawings. Quite a package really - and all on the one disc. I had a few problems when I tried to play all the deleted scenes in a continuous run (sound and picture started skipping for some reason) but stopping the DVD and starting again seemed to solve the problem. There's also the usual irritating pause in the film you tend to experience with most DVDs (unless it's my DVD player that's at fault!)

Basically a great film to end the adventures of the TNG crew. If it really is the end...

Rating: 2 of out 5 - Rick Berman, Stuart Baird, & John Logan..SHAME ON YOU!!!!!!

One word can sum up Star Trek: Nemesis..disappointing. I watched the film with anticipation of a good story with excellent special effects and continuing story-arcs for the Next Generation cast through the films. What I got was a badly plotted, hotch-potch of a movie which I rate as eigth best in the series of ten movies, coming in ahead of Star Trek V (who let Shatner direct anyway??) and the original Star Trek: The Motion Picture (like watching very expensive paint dry!!). The special effects had little WOW factor, especially when you consider the space battles which were fought in series six and seven of Deep Space Nine between literally hundreds of vessels. Why could this not be done with this movie???

Harve Bennet and Jack Sowards should sue for plagorism of their script and story for Star Trek II as all this film accomplishes is a very poor remake.

My advice would be even if you are a Star Trek fanatic rent this movie, and then watch Star Trek II from your collection.

Rating: 2 of out 5 - The sad nemesis of this great series

Oh, I am clearly old and fusty. However I must confess never really getting the various newer off-shoots of the great Star Trek series of the 1960s. The original characterisation and plot themes were so strong that Kirk, Spock and McCoy carried all before them. The Next Generation was scarcely a chip off that old block. Indeed they foundered and sank in a sea of mushy political correctness. Are there no bad empires/nations any more? We all want to fight the Klingons!!

Nemesis is no better. Woeful character interaction and ham plot. Great special effects- but it is difficult to care for any of these cardboard characters. The series has definitely reached the end of its run. Bring back Jim Kirk in his wheechair I say. Anything is better than having to listen to a "ship's counseller" or Data trying to be empathetic. And who is that "No.1"? Someone retired from the cast of Baywatch? Please!

Rating: 5 of out 5 - thumbs up for 10th trek!!!!!!

I loveed this film within the first ten minutes of watching it.

Star Trek:Nemesis introduces a new side to the trek franchise ,a darker side.
While the likes of Generations and First contact have had classic trek races like The klingons and The borg,Nemesis introduces the remans and their master shinzon but it also features The Romulans.

Captain Picard (Patrick Stewart) and the enterprise crew are celebrating the wedding of first officer Will Riker (Jonathan Frakes) and Ships Counselor Deanna Troi (Marina Sirtis).
While travelling to Betazaid for the traditional Betazoid ceremony Picard gets hailed by Admiral Janeway (Kate Mulgrew)and is asked to go to the border of the Neutral zone and this is the point where Picards clone is introduced, Shinzon (Tom Hardy).
Shinzon raises the lights and he is finally revealed but while talking to Picard he takes more than a passing notice of Troi and becomes memorized by her but he finally moves on and cuts his hand on a knife and gives it to Data.

But this is not like any of the trek films ive seen before and trust me ive seen all of them at least 4 times. This is a must buy for all star trek fans but its also enjoyable for non star trek fans.

I give this film 5 stars out of 5 for the special effects, the acting, the crews hard work and the whole story.

Rating: 5 of out 5 - Utterly brilliant

I have often been disappointed with Star Trek films, there's an old saying (Klingon, I believe) that 'The odd numbered films are rubbish and the even numbered films good'. Certainly that has been true for me. Of the Next Generation films, 7 (Generations) was abysmal, 8 (First Contact) was excellent and 9 (Insurrection) was just woeful. I've lost interest in the Trek franchise of late, Voyager was ok, as was DS9 but Enterprise is awful and I've found myself drifting ever closer to the wonderful Babylon 5 for my Sci-fi fix. Having grown up to some extent with The Next Generation on TV, I hoped for so much more from the theatrical releases but was often hugely let down.

Not so, however, with Nemesis. This film gripped me from start to finish. There are some funny moments, some poignant scenes, no overacting by Brent Spiner (Data) and yet in contrast Patrick Stewart seems to revel under the wonderful direction of Stuart Baird. I have always found his character 'wooden', but not so in this film. Captain Jean-Luc Picard (Stewart), so often the po-faced captain of the Enterprise, fairly lets rip with his emotions. The special effects are breathtakingly good, more akin to Babylon 5 in the way the battle scenes are shot (the way the ships break apart when hit as opposed to simply blowing up). The backdrop of space is even given a dash of colour as the Enterprise and the baddie ship Scimitar battle it out near a bright green nebula ! This is how Trek should be - fantastic battles, great acting, a strong storyline.

Shinzon (Tom Hardy) is a strange bad guy, not in the same mould as ST 2's 'The Wrath of Khan' baddie Khan Singh, but menacing in a subtle way. His soft voice almost lulls you into a false sense of security. Great acting by Mr Hardy.

The musical score is excellent as are the other main character's performances. I loved the wedding scene between Troi and Riker, and even Data's impromtu karaoke brought a smile to my face. Best of all though is the death (or is it ?) of a major character. So quick, so clinical, so unexpected. One sentence, "Goodbye". Grab the tissues !

All in all an excellent film. The DVD extra's are what you'd expect, with 7 deleted scenes (my favourite being 'Advice to a first officer') and 4 short documentaries which are worth watching.

I have owned this film for four days now and I'm on to my 5th watch. I simply can't get enough of it.
