Due, in no small way, to absolutely ridiculous scheduling by Channel 4 (“Oh, the cricket’s finished early, what have we got to fill a twenty-minute gap?”), Futurama, Matt Groening’s follow up to The Simpsons, has never quite achieved the popularity that the dysfunctional yellow family commands in the UK. Which is a huge shame, because Futurama is bigger, ruder and funnier than The Simpsons ever was.
Following the adventures of Philip Fry, an idiot who got cryogenically frozen by accident and defrosted in the year 3000, Futurama brings together a group of freaks and oddballs and lets the chips fall. You can forget the science-fiction aspect of it because there isn’t really one – this comedy is all about human interaction and family values.
This exquisitely designed boxset contains the entire second production season (which translates to half of the second and third broadcast seasons). That’s nineteen episodes, spread across four discs. Those who lament Region 2’s inferiority might like to bear in mind that there’s still no release date for either this or the first season boxset in the US.
The episodes are universally great, not a single duff gag to be found. If you’re a fan of the series these are worth having just for all the rude jokes that get cut for TV. And if that wasn’t enough, every single episode has a full-length commentary with Matt Groening, David X Cohen (Exec Producer) and a host of others (including voice talent) which rarely fail to be entertaining, even if you do occasionally notice the strain of filling 437 minutes.
More gems can be found in the extras menus; deleted scenes, animatics, character profiles and Easter eggs abound.
It’s to be expected that the picture is in TV format with mere stereo sound and this is not in any way a detraction from the value of the set. Quality-wise, both are immaculate. Rarely has a disc been so deserving of your money.

- What Makes a man turn neutral?
Just one of the many great quotes from Matt Greoning's latest DVD set!
Futurama Season 2 once again follows the adventures of Bender, Lela, Fry, Zoidberg and the rest of the crew on another fun filled season, Delivering goods to planets beteen earth and the edges of the known universe... Well, that's what they are SUPPOSED TO DO. The truth is that they only actually deliver 4 or 5 things in all 19 episodes... the rest of the time is one long run of goofing off, and trying to avoid work, only as 31st century folks can!
Follow our gang into the sewers of NNYC, to the depths of the lost city of Atlanta, or to Lela's home planet. Or, you can follow Zap Brannigan's one-man-crusade against the Neutral Planet in "Brannigan Begin Again".
No matter where our heroes go, you can always be assured of a good laugh, so buy this DVD, and keep yourself warm this winter!
Also, the Commentry isn't half bad, either, with each episode containing at least 5 members of the creative team, and atleast 2 of them worked on the simpsons, as well. And you get all the jokes from behind the scenes of the show!

- To finally end the epic battle between Good and Neutral
Futurama season 2 contains 19 whole episodes of Matt Greoning's latest cartoon creation. Be warned, though, this set is not intended for young kids, and includes some mild swearing that was edited out for the TV version (ba*****, etc). Other than that, all of these episodes can be counted as classics of the genre, especially the second episode, "Branagin, begin again" where the famous Zap Branagin becomes the captain of the Planet Express crew, and decides to go to war with the neutral planet. As you may have guessed, there are a load of classic neutral comments in this episode, as seen as the title, and the similarly famous phrase "What makes a man turn neutral?".
Other classics included in this set are "Ahead in the polls" - when Richard Nixon's Head becomes the president of earth, "Xmas Story" - where an evil robot santa claus is bent on killing all the naughty boys and girls, and the greatly catchy tune from "How Hermes Requisitioned his groove back".
Infact, all 19 episodes are classics in their own way, and all focusing on everybody's favorite delivery company from the year 3001. Fry, Bender, Lela and the gang are back!!

- Futurama's Greatest Season (Except for 3 and 1, of course)
Why, might you ask, would someone waste their not-so-hard earned money on a DVD set? Well, if it is a DVD set of Futurama, my answer would be this: There is nothing better to waste your money on than this set! Now, you are, perhaps, asking "why?" and my answer is this: Futurama is a whitty, well-written, caustically hilarious animated series. Season 2 was a classic, and above and beyond the average television series. With loveable characters, such as Fry, Bender, Zoidberg, Leela and Amy, how could you go wrong? The extras on this DVD will assumably be standard outtakes, commentary, etc...which makes this purchase that much more valid. I am not saying to purchase this if it means you won't be able to pay the rent this month, but I am saying that if you have to choose between this purchase and a birthday gift for your lousy half-brother, than, you know which would be the right and good thing to do: forget the half-brother and please you for a change. Stop being stingy with yourself!
So, in conclusion, in the ever-true words of Phillup J. Fry, "I need the apartment tonight. Go see a saucy puppet show."

- A MUST for fans of Groening
This is THE merchandise event for Futurama fans in 2002.
The episodes in this set originally aired from November 21th 1999 to December 3rd 2000 on FOX in the USA. With 19 episodes, it was the first full season for the show. Many fans currently see this season as plainly the best. Gems include "Xmas Story" in which SantaBot comes to town to see who was naughty, "The Problem with Popplers" with a weird twist and "Anthology of Interest I" where the authors show us three "what if?" stories - the equivalent to the treehouse of horror episode of The Simpsons.
The extras on the discs are rich, too. We get full episode length commentaries by the authors and voices for each and every episode, promotional clips, cut scenes that didn't make it into the TV version and then even more!
Let me add that I'm happily surprised by the low price on Amazon with this release. Usually I buy from brick and mortar stores, but this they just can't beat.
