Rating: 2 of out 5 - Very long winded, slow and botched together...

I sat through all of this film feeling cheated that so much of my life had been taken away.

Now, you gotta love Robert De Niro for some of the roles he has done in the past, I feel that in some movies like Goodfellas you have all the craziness around you and Robert De Niro is just his usual mellow self and that works.

However in this slow, very long film, De Niro (being his usual self) made the film even more painful, it usually took him about ten minutes to say anything...!

It picks up at times but then it goes to the past and then to the future and all for the sake of a suitcase.

There is also some lack of reality in this film, they start as soft kids of which only Robert De Niro has the right stuff to do over one of the other gang members but then as time goes on they all suddenly become touch nut cases.

They also have this ability to take on everyone in the city with just four men.

This film is full of holes (time holes mainly), much like the cars after these guys had finished with them.

Nowhere near a perfect gangster movie.

Rating: 5 of out 5 - Essential viewing

One of my all time favourite films.

The good bits ... the acting is superb (the "kids" are particularly brilliant), the story is captivating ... I feel like I really know the characters. The music is truly beautiful - hey, I know a man isn't supposed to say that, but it's true!

The bad bits ... not many. Perhaps a bit long - there could have been a bit of trimming by Leone, and then the studio would have released it originally without slicing it to pieces. Some bad voice-dubbing here and there ... I thought my DVD was playing up! And one has to mention "that scene" - I thought it was over the top. You will know what scene I mean when you see it. It is pretty controversial stuff.

The plot is slightly confusing but I like that. That is a part of the charm - you have to make up your own mind of what it is all about!

Where is the blu-ray version? C'mon Warner, sort it out! :)

Rating: 5 of out 5 - Once upon a time in America...

Sergio Leone's final film and possibility his greatest piece of cinema is still only available in a two disc set because of the marathon running time, this was of great annoyance to the film company who for the theatrical release cut it down from the mind bogglingly long 229 minutes to a mere 139 minutes, I remember seeing an interview with one of the actors Leone had used in the past James Coburn where Leone told him that they had taken out the essence of his vision and Leone never saw the original cut in his adopted country and for some reason this masterpiece of cinema wasn't nominated for any Oscars either what a travesty.
This sprawling epic tale told over generations by the master film-maker Sergio Leone's is unfortunately his final epic, in all departments from the cinematography to the editing and the performances of all the actors Leone bring all his craft to the table for the viewer to enjoy.

The cast involved notably James Woods who gives one of the performances of the year as Max and Robert de Niro is stunning as "Noodles" and the use of the long-time partner fellow Italian Ennio Morricone whose score brings all these elements together for a experience like no other.

I look forward to the day that this masterpiece is re-mastered brought up to HD standard and released as a single Blu-Ray disc for the feature and another for the features, documentaries and interviews with the cast.
