A breeze as a bridge or router

Rating: 5out of 5 - Shayne

I have a 3Com router/modem combination and I have this router for additional computers. I tried D-Link, Netgear and one other I cant remember the name of before linksys. The linksys was sooooo easy compared to the others and has worked perfectly.

I had this wireless G Linksys in the box for well over a year before I got around to setting it up last night (Aug 6-2006). At first I did the quick setup without using the CD. It created an open access point and I couldn't figure out how to set wep security so I reinstalled using the CD and went step by step. For about an hour after I set it up my laptop said it was connected to the wireless network but my Explorer kept giving me Page Cannot Be Displayed. I got really worked up but I finally cycled my Roadrunner modem and after doing that everything seems fine. I would have thought the router automaticallly updates but from the posts I'm seeing here I guess not. I'm almost afraid to mess with it now! I'm on a Dell laptop that automatically detects all netwrks in my area.

Linksys Problems

Rating: 1out of 5 - Tanksr

I also just spent 4 hours trying to set up my WRT54G. Neither my DSL company nor Linksys could solve the problem. It simply doesn't work. I'm taking this junk back today. ANybody know of a GOOD router that will work with Verizon DSL???

It's okay

Rating: 4out of 5 - Chestr

Quick and easy to install in a basic configuration. Easy enough to configure for more advanced uses, too.

The bad thing: the v5 doesn't easily run any "open firmware" products.

The good thing: a lot of the features you'd want from OpenWRT (or others) is already included.

Problems experienced: Upgrading firmware can be a real pain - I have two WRT54Gv5's and one will update, the other will not. Since one sits behind the other (don't ask) it isn't that big a deal, just be aware it can be an issue.

Thoughts on other reviews: C'mon guys! If you're dropping your connection every 30 seconds it's because you have allowed WinXP to manage your wireless connections. Turn that junk service off and use the software that came with your WLAN Cards and your drops will cease. Good luck!

WRT54G

Rating: 1out of 5 - Steve

This wireless, 4 port switch router just won't work. I had the very same problem, the linksys router was bad. I return it and got another one. Now, I?m still having a problem making the wireless (WAP) to work. I?m strongly considering returning this piece of crap. Cisco Systems what?s happening to quality assurance? Or, is this sub-par standard acceptable.

Linksys WRT54G

Rating: 1out of 5 - Joy

Just bought a brand new computer today and a Linksys router. Have just spent the past four hours with tech support between the DSL company and Linksys. Will not work. Spoke with six different reps..finally said router was bad. I am so irritated.

the best for home users

Rating: 5out of 5 - MaRk

I am a DSL technician for one of the biggest ISP in USA .. and i found that Linksys WRT54G is really good , and is very easy to configure , best in security, file sharing and speed , unlike 2wire , netgear and belkin routers ,,and it aslo has a superb range of 100 ft....

Rock Solid after 1.5 years

Rating: 5out of 5 - KS

After fighting with a brand new Netgear wireless router for a month, I dumped it in the trash (couldn't return it, no support from vendor or mfgr) and bought the Linksys WRT54G router. It set up perfectly and easily and has worked perfectly ever since.

It has excellent throughput, makes 40-50Mbps when in range, and has superb range (100-200 feet) in my old plaster house.

I just can't complain. I also can't speak to the Linksys customer support as I've never had occasion to call them.

Rating: 5 of out 5 - Great router

I bought it a few months ago and it has been working perfectly fine for me. My earlier router was a Netgear and it used to drop the connection at random intervals. There is no such issue with this one, though. Setup is very easy too. Definitely value for money!

Rating: 3 of out 5 - WRT54g Version 7

Good _budget_ wifi-router.
Pray you get a v7.2 and not a v7.0.

I have received (early May 2008) a version 7 WRT54g from Amazon. Version 7 uses a different chipset to the previous incarnation and suffers from frequent loss of wifi signal. Linksys has replaced version 7 with version 7.2 in which they have reverted to using the original (correctly implemented) chipset. Once updated to the latest /beta/ firmware (contact Linksys) the version 7 /seems/ to be stable, but the signal strength is still less than it should be.

Rating: 4 of out 5 - Good, but not entirely feature complete

Overall a very good router. I've used other Linksys products in the past (including previous revisions of this router) and have always been pleased with them. Not a whole lot has changed since they were acquired by Cisco so long time customers shouldn't expect anything too different from the good old stuff.

Setup of the router was very straight-forward. I performed the setup from my Mac using Firefox (the admin page on the router doesn't load properly in Safari 2) and configured the security parameters for the wireless network quickly. I must admit to lot looking at the supplied documentation much at all as I've set up plenty of these routers in the past but it looked pretty accurate from a cursory glance.

Network performance is solid - the signal doesn't drop out at all as far as I've noticed. The power of the WiFi transmitter seems to be decent as well. One good thing about this router is that it has two external aerials so if you're struggling with network range you can purchase some higher gain aerials to try and improve it. If you want to get really geeky you can fabricate and attach a couple of parabolic reflectors to limit off-property network coverage and boost the signal where you need it. Do a Google search and you'll find plenty of sites giving instructions. Or buy the Wireless Hacks book from O'Reilly for lots of other tips as well!

There are a couple of features I'd like which are absent. The ability to buy two of the same router and use one as a signal booster for the wireless network, and the facility to increase the power going to the radio transmitter, would have been fantastic. They're not features which everyone is going to want but it'd make a geeks life easier if they were there.

As far as I know, the firmware on this late revision of the router can't be changed. Either that, or the open source hackable firmwares available don't support this revision. The greatest thing about the older models of this router was that you can change the firmware to get these extra features but I couldn't get one to install on this revision. Gutted.

Rating: 1 of out 5 - Fault in Web Set Up Page

Having read numerous forums there appears to be a common fault in the web set up page - my unit had it too. Of the hundreds of examples none were resolved. DO NOT BUY until Linksys fix this problem.

Rating: 4 of out 5 - Good router - poor software

The router itself is very good and the wireless signal is pretty decent but the software which comes with it is very disappointing.

As I already had a modem/router set up and working this should have just been a case of swapping some cables over and reconfiguring the wireless security on the new router.

Unfortunately, I made the mistake of following the provided instructions which stated that before I do anything I should run the provided installation CD. This was a big mistake. The CD goes through the process of connecting the wires etc, and then claims that it cannot find a connection to the internet, even though the router itself says that their is a connection.

For some reason the installation CD needed me to enter a username and password for my ISP, even though these are stored in the modem and this unit clearly states that it does not contain a modem!

After about 4 hours of trying I discovered that I needed to reset the router to factory settings, bin the provided CD and just plug the wires in. Hey presto - I had a connection to the internet!

Overall, the router seems very reliable and was very easy to set up. Just make sure to set up manually and don't use the provided installation disc as it may just mess things up.
