I bought this Linksy Wireless Router a week ago, and the connection DROPS ALL THE TIME.
DO NOT BUY THIS PRODUCT EVEN IF IT IS THIS CHEAP!!!!!
connection drops every 30 secs

I bought the Linksys router to play online multiplayer games. I was sorely dissapointed to find that eevery 30 secs the connection drops out for about 1 - 2 secs meaning the game your playing freezes. TO other players on games you are frozen and they can shoot you with ease, or you think you've run round a corner and it freezes and your back where you were before you started running. DO NOT BUY THIS PRODUCT FOR ONLINE GAMING - YOU WILL HAVE NO HAIR LEFT WITHIN A WEEK.

i wouldnt touch another linksys product with a barge pole. all i wanted to do was connect a lap top and desk top to internet at same time, auto install didnt work, spent an hour on the phone with help desk technician, (states quick and easy to install) . now after about 2 hours my desk top drops connection, then it takes me at least three boot ups to get back on line using just the modem connection to desk top. ive already put one person off buying linksys, and will do the same in future if i know of anyone wanting wireless networking.
WRT54G with V5 router doesn't work

Bought a WRT54G V5 for use at home via a cable set top box from NTL. Wired connections are fine, but wireless would not work at all. Tried two routers, and made several calls and had 8 on-line chats with Linksys, eventually they told me that they are waiting for a new firmware version for V5 to address problems with DHCP allocation of IP addresses, until then however, they advised that I return the router(s) to vendor. Most annoying... apparantly this new firmware version is due in March, but nothing definite yet.

- Nice router, but problems with VPN
Used this for a couple of weeks now with my home network, and it has not put a foot wrong - very easy to set up and completely stable, with no dropped connections.
However, a showstopper for me is the unreliability of the VPN connection. It has completely failed to connect to my company network via VPN despite the best efforts of both our in-house IT support and Linksys. I can connect fine with the PC connected directly to the modem, or even via an alternative Netgear router, but this model just doesn't seem to handle the necessary protocols correctly. This appears to have been an issue with this router for some time, and runs through many firmware upgrades, as there are many such references in the support forums.
If you want it just for domestic use, with no need to connect to your company network, I'd give it a solid 5 stars, but for VPN access there may be better options.

- Looks pretty - but not up to the job
Had a lot of problems with drop-out, needing to access the router via a browser and 'refresh' the status page at least once an hour. No solutions on Linksys website, but trawling the web forums brought up plenty of other folk suffering the same problem with this kit and no answers. Avoid.

- Good Product
I bought the WRT54G to replace the Apple Airport Express that I'd been using to network a Desktop PC, Apple Ibook and Laptop. Became tired of network printer problems from the Airport's USB and decided to run the internet side of the network separately.
Did a lot of research to choose this router as it needed to work with both Apple Macintosh and Windows computers. I've only given the WRT54G 4 stars because i've only had it for one day plus the couple of difficulties I had getting the network up and running.
Dispatched on Monday came on Tuesday 8am. Nice one Amazon!
Installation is straight foward enough. Connct the WRT54G to your computer using your LAN cable, connect your Broadband modem (in my case NTL) run the the set up cd that comes with it and follow the prompts.
One problem to look out for, after i'd run the install cd I had trouble viewing the WRT54G web set up page. (it's where you control your WRT54G features like port fowarding and assigning addresses etc.) Internet Explorer 7 on my desktop PC (XP Home) kept dispalying the web page with errors on it, basically I couldn't edit any of the WRT54G settings because they couldn't be viewed! (The plot thickened when the web setup page viewed fine from my daughters laptop and my partners ibook but still not the desktp PC!)
Went to Linksys webpage for help but couldn't find a soloution. Took a deep breath and did a google. Discovered the 'Zone Alarms Security suite' on my desktop PC neeeded to be shut down completely. Why? Who knows. I'd turned off the Zone Alarms firewall but left the rest of the suite on thinking that was enough. Save yourself a few hours of hard work and turn off all security before you run the install cd. Be warned.
The second problem is my internet connection speed drops from 54Mbps to as low as 38Mbps when I've unplugged the LAN and used my Desktops BT 1040 wireless card to connect to the WRT54G! (The WRT54G and PC are both in our front room no more than a few feet from each other so why the drop outs I haven't a clue!)
The WRT54G that I received from Amazon is version 7 (it's printed on the bottom of the unit) So I went to Linksys website and downloaded the firmware update then installed it using the WRT54G web page, hopefully this will solve the speed dropouts with the BT 1040 card. Once I've had my weetabix and 8 hours sleep i'll test the desktop wirelessly again! Didn't notice any drop in speed with the Caompaq laptop or ibook though so maybe it's the BT card. Once i've tested it i'll add another review. I can only compare this product with my last network router (as i've only used one) the Airport Express and the WRT54G seems to be better featured and simplier to use than the Airport. All round though i'm happy with this product and would recommend it.

- Very good, until now...
I bought the WRT54G v.5 in March 2006. Setting it up was easy, I wired the PC in then used the supplied CD to change the connection settings automatically. Once the PCs were set up with a wired connection they were pretty much ready for a wireless one. (Note: you need a separate wireless adaptor for your PC)
Once it was set up I didn't need to change the settings for normal use. However, I learned a lot about all the different settings and managed to tweak them a little to suit my needs better. That included adding video game consoles and changing security settings amongst other things. Over the last ten months I've only had to reset a few times. I was enjoying the trouble free use of this excellent router.
Until this week. Yesterday the network connection cut out. I couldn't communicate with the router, let alone connect to the internet. A reset sorted that out. But then the same thing happened this morning and resetting didn't work. I got onto Linksys support who confirmed it was broken. I emailed Amazon about it and they are sending a new one out for me because it's still under warranty.
This would have had a full five stars from me if it hadn't broken. I can't say it's unique to Linksys, though. I used to have another wireless router from a top brand which became faulty a month out of warranty. While it was working, I found the Linksys WRT54G v.5 to be a very good router.

- Working well so far!
I've owned this product since March 2006 and it has worked flawlessly so far (touch wood!) with Telewest/Blueyonder cable. It was relatively straightforward to set up, including security. Seems to have a good range - works downstairs perfectly. Would thoroughly recommend!
