Rating: 3 of out 5 - WRT54G v5 fix for slow downloads

I purchased the WRT54G v5 wireless router just over a month ago. I set it up with no problems on my Windows XP SP2 desktop using a WMP54G PCI adapter. However, I noticed my download speeds with my ntl 1mbps cable modem were much slower. After hours playing with the settings I looked on Google and found lots of other complaints about v5. I contacted Linksys and after approx 1 hour on the phone (after trying lots of different settings and MTU speeds) they suggested I updated the firmware. This fixed my slow download problem. For info the site is:
ftp://ftp.linksys.com/international/firmware
The latest firmware for the WRT54G v5 is v1.00.4 (Dec 8 2005).
Only gets 3 stars due to the hassle of getting it to work properly!

Rating: 2 of out 5 - Third router in 5 weeks

WRT54G v.5 Firmware Version: v1.00.2

My first router worked well for 1 week and then gave up (continually flashing power light). Contacted Linksys and they talked me through various options but in end said I needed a replacement. Amazon quickly provided replacement.
Seemed to work well until I accessed some travel sites that needed to exchange information with my computer. Contacted Linksys and they fixed problem by setting MTU to 1400 rather than auto. Worked for a while although froze on one occasion and had to be restarted. Recently noticed decrease in download speed of files to 6KB/Sec whereas with NTL cable modem connected directly get 211 KB/Sec. Downloaded and installed latest firmware – no improvement.
Contacted Linksys and after restarts and factory resets they focused on firmware and MTU settings. Still nothing would improve speed and they stated a hardware problem so need my third router in 5 weeks. Interested to note someone else has problem with v.5 router.

Rating: 5 of out 5 - Easy to set up, working great!

After buying this router from Amazon, I was impressed at how easy it was to install. It took me around 20 minutes in total, which included installing my network card and checking wireless and ethernet connections.

I now have three wireless connections using this router, and everyone works fine. The webpage-based interface is very easy to use.

A tip I'd give you is to write down all your IP information before you install the router. To do this, make sure your modem is connected to the computer as normal, go to Start > Run > type in "CMD" (no quotation marks!) > Type in "ipconfig/all" (again, no quotation marks) > press Enter and note down everything which is there. This will save you having to call up your ISP to request these details, as the installation suggests. If you do this whilst your router is connected, it won't connect to your modem properly.

The only problem I have is the colour - why the bright blue? It's not a big issue, though.

Rating: 4 of out 5 - Top router with dropping connection

Bought this router to be used with my brand new Dell laptop with built-in Intel Pro Wireless 2200BG and NTL Cable STB. Installation was easy if you follow the onscreen instructions from the CD.

First off it needs you to hard-wire the router with the laptop with the ethernet cable provided. At the end of this brief installation wizard you can take the ethernet cable away and the laptop was browsing the internet in no time.

For the inexperienced the wizard does not explain the security setting you can enable using the router setup-interface. I have set-up mine up with WPA-PSK.
I'm very happy with the range and the signal strength. It always says strength is excellent and a few speed tests revealed no significant reduction.

The reason for giving it only 4 stars is that after few days of using it I have noticed the connection drops off every hour or so. I had no help from the linksys people so my solution at the moment is to just renew the IP address on the fly.

Rating: 5 of out 5 - Great for ntl broadband

I use ntl broadband and wanted to buy a wireless router to connect a laptop. I bought Linksys after reading the previous reviews. For some reason, the Setup CD did not take me through the end - even though I could start browsing from my Desktop, the setup suggested that there were some more steps. I rebooted the desktop and everything worked. I used the default URL they provided http://192.168.1.1/ to change the wireless security settings. Apart from enabling the wireless LAN, I did not have to do anything from the laptop (Dell Inspiron 510m), it just worked.
