Rating: 5 of out 5 - Nice bit of kit

Seems strange doesn't it? An mp3 player getting 1 star reviews or rave reviews. Bit odd that I think.
Anyway all I am going to say is this. I have trouble with computers (I don't like them) and I have a modicum of knowledge. If it takes me about an hour or less to suss out the software, then trust me it's easy. Easy as in easy peasy, OK?
As for reviewers who say they freeze and don't work. Well chaps I have just took one backpacking around the Himalayas of India and Nepal. Not a smooth ride at the best of times. I have dropped it 3 times on hard surfaces. Twice it was fine, one time it went funny and wouldn't scroll and I presumed was in need of repair. Fair enough seeing as it had just takien a almighty wack. Well there was no need for repair because after a week it fixed itself and was working fine!
This is a classic bit of kit and has served me well. Buy the creative earplug type earphones (about 20 quid), and you are set. Why people need huge earphones is beyond me, they let in too much background noise.
Trust me this a fantastic mp3 player.

Rating: 3 of out 5 - is it worth it?

This mp3 player is fantastic and great value for money (although the touchpad is a bit fiddly) right until the moment it breaks down, like mine did just 4 months after I got it. I know a lot of people who have had similar problems with their Creative mp3 players as well.

Rating: 1 of out 5 - I'd love to give it 5, but...

I've had three die on me in 6 months. The first just refused to switch on or charge up after less than a month of having it. Amazon changed it without a problem (thank you Amazon) The second lasted a bit longer - a whole 3.5 months, but then somehow locked its on/off slider switch way over to the side where you slide it to switch it on/off, while in use and without unlocking the keypad which I had locked. While trying (gently) to push the slider to another position, I managed to break it entirely thus rendering it useless. Creative replaced this one without a quibble but the replacement lasted a whole 2 weeks before failing in the same way as the first. I am now trying to get them to bother enough to reply to my e-mail (since I can't get a phone number for them) to see what they will do.

I would love to give it 5 stars as I think it's a thing of beauty which also works very well. I had no problems with the touch controls from the start and found all of its controls very intuitive and easy to use. Sound quality is excellent, provided you replace the rubbishy earphones it comes with.

In summary, if you get one which works, then you'll love it. Otherwise, prepare to find yourself in an endless round of replacements.

Rating: 5 of out 5 - Very Good Product

I bought both of my Sons one each - they are used every day without any major problems. One froze once but by hitting the reset button at the back the problem was solved. I have owned Creative mp3 players since their first (before the days of ipods) and have never had a problem.
Owners should remember that there are firmware upgrades available to download from the Creative Website. Check worldwide not just UK firmware downloads as this machine was not initialy intended for the UK market. These upgrades solve a large number of the problems referenced in other reviews.
For those of us that spend a lot of time travelling the world on a regular basis a 30 Gig machine is a must - this one fits the bill. An excellent machine.

Rating: 3 of out 5 - This thing has issues

Neat size, great storage capacity for the money, easy to use once you master the controls (although the lack of a Stop button is annoying), love the blue light and sound quality is OK (not as great as some people are claiming) - but basically unreliable. I bought this primarily as a back-up device for my music collection stored on a Windows MCE PC; unfortunately the Zen software isn't compatible with Media Centre. It crashes and doesn't recognise the player at all unless you spend ages fiddling with it. But Zen seems to work OK with plain old XP Home SP2 (come on Creative, why no update for MCE 2005?). The little beggar has frozen a half dozen times, eventually I found the reset button (pin hole left of power switch) after the player ran with a blank screen on full illumination for about 5 hours (no problems with battery life then!). If, like me, you are used to flaky technology (don't the manufacturer's test these things for real-life use?) then go ahead and buy but unless you have the patience of a Saint best stick to CDs.
