Rating: - Blend of fun and frustration

This is a 'top down' shooter as you control a gun weaving mechanic as he battles against alien invasion of a planet.
An entertaining array of weapons that you can build onto and a fair range of aliens and tension as you wander down corridors trying to undertake missions and avoid alien related death!

There is a story but it is not that important you just need to battle through one level to the next!

So far it is quite good fun, but the frustration is that you have five lives and no saving opportunity and the game is quite hard at times. So you replay each level time and time again until you finally survive to the end. Given that each level can take 20 mins or so, that is too much replay time and does get frustrating. You can spend an hour or so on the game and by the end you may be back where you started!

But when the game is in full flow it is fun and it is entertaining to blow those nasty aliens to bits with your variety of heavy duty weapons!
It took me longer to finish this then it did Half Life 2 episode 2 because of the repeat stuff, but I did keep going back to it so the fun outweighs the frustration!

Rating: - Alien Breed gets a serious update!

Shadowgrounds is a 360 top down shooter like you used to get in the late 80s and earlier 90s. The game that springs to mind straight away is the legendary Alien Breed.

The graphics aren't the best in the world but for a game like this there awesome. The developers have made great use of lighting that adds really good atmosphere to the game and makes it really creepy in places. Another good use of the lighting system is the torch, some of the aliens are scared of the light and will run away but others are attracted to light.

The sounds make this game creepy as well. It's not uncommon to be walking down the corridor and heard the aliens before you see them. You'll hear their sounds, you'll be checking all round you, you'll be checking the radar but all you'll see are blobs all around you. Hehehe!

The background music is really good as well. It adds atmosphere to the levels and pounding rock music when in a battle.

The weapons in the game are the best i've seen in this type of shooter. They are well thought out and imaginative not just thrown in as an after thought like in many games nowadays. For your shooting pleasure there's a pistol, pulse rifle, shotgun, rocket launcher (what game would be complete without one?), lasergun, grenade launcher, railgun :D, electric gun, flame thrower, minigun :D. Another great thing about the weapons is the ability to upgrade them. Upgrade points are dropped by aliens after you kill them so that means the more aliens you kill the better weapons you get!

This is a great budget release that really shows off what smaller developers can do! Here's look forward to Frozenbytes next release!

Rating: - Best action/arcade game I've played for a very long time!

As previous reviewers have mentioned, the game is akin to a modern Alien Breed (which is a damn good thing!)

The game has excellent graphics, with the lighting effects setting the atmosphere very well. There have been a few moments where I have jumped out my skin due to being attacked in the dark without my torch on. The gameplay mechanics are also very good; the keyboard/mouse combination lends itself well to the game. The game sound leaves a little to be desired, but it is not that bad.

Overall, a very good game. I purchased this about 10 minutes after playing the demo :)

Rating: - Great old-school fun!

Shadowgrounds is an old-school style shooter with lots of weapons and even more enemies. The weapons are even upgradeable which gives some great gameplay options.

Don't be fooled by the top-down view, the graphics are brilliant, especially the lighting effects which really are outstanding.

If you like simple games that are a lot of fun then try this out!
