Powered by Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare technology, Call of Duty: World at War brings an uncensored edge to combat, as soldiers face the most harrowing and climatic European and Pacific battles in which an enemy, who knows no surrender and no retreat, will fight to the last breath, unleashing an arsenal of lethal surprising tactics. Peril and danger lurk throughout the battlefield as players combat the unknown risk of the new chaos of battle.
From the remains of Russia and the ruins of Berlin, to the beach and jungles of the deadly Pacific Theater, the volatile action takes on added depth as players employ new features that previously were only available in multiplayer, including perks, rankings and online stats in up to full four-player co-operative gameplay. New infantry and vehicle-based weapons, like the potent flamethrower, bring the battlefield ablaze.

- Great game, with too much hate due bias against developer.First of all, I'll state that i own this on Xbox 360, so i can't comment on the issues which are relevent to the PC only.
The Campaign:
The campaign is fairly mediocre. There's the usual stuff in there. Kill some enemies, run forward, kill some more enemies, run forward again. Nothing amazing here, although there is a good deal of variation with the flamethrower, plane and tank level. I advise not attempting Veteran if you don't like being frustrated. There's grenade spam everywhere, and If you even miss a single enemy, they can take you out.
Not a bad campaign, considering that it's not the main focus of the game by a long shot, although it's nothing that will leave you gobsmacked. Worth a play through on normal, or hardened.
The Multiplayer:
The multiplayer is actually very good. Some things have been improved on vastly since cod4, such as spawns, grenade power and the variation in the weapons. No longer will you find yourself trapped in your spawn, unable to do anything (still not the best spawns of any game by a long shot, but a DEFINITE improvement. Anyone saying otherwise is just plain and simple ignorant). No longer will you be constantly barraged by grenades thrown randomly over buildings.
Some people seem to be complaining about tanks being overpowered, although it's actually extremely easy to take them out. Two satchel charges, and it's dead. One satchel if correctly placed can actually destroy a tank from full health.
The variation in the weapons is great. Every weapon feels completely different to the next (can't be said for cod4 or mw2). Using a number of different weapons is highly enjoyable, and the flamethrower, although not the best gun by a long shot, is amazingly fun to use.
There are however, three rather annoying down sides to the multiplayer:
-Mp40s- The mp40 is widely agreed to be extremely overpowered. It will usually kill in two hits, even without stopping power, and the clip size with the round drum attachment is just ridiculous.
-Juggernaut- Probably the most annoying perk in the game. The number of bullets it takes to bring someone using this perk down is just too big. If you like to snipe, this perk will annoy you more than any other, as you'll often not get a one hit kill when you otherwise would.
-Bouncing Betties- The frustration when you come across one of these hidden away somewhere randomly is huge. They are practically free kills for the planter, and require no skill to use whatsoever. They can become no problem when using Bomb Squad, which allows you to see them through walls, but this does mean you cannot use bandolier, which is a must on some guns, such as the PPSH-41 or the STG-44.
Nazi Zombies:
Ah, now on to the truly amazing part of the otherwise mediocre game that is World at War. Nazi zombies is endless hours of fun, especially when teaming up with 1-3 other people. Even the very minimalistic first map is great fun, where it's just you, some guns and a whole lot of zombies. You'll find yourself constantly wanting to beat your highest round, and when you download any of the map packs, the fun is increased many fold. The addition of perks, new weapons, teleporters, dogs, the pack-a-punch, a tonne of easter eggs, electro defences, and much larger, more detailed maps turns this from a nice little side minigame to what is worthy of being a game on it's own.
Even if you do not enjoy the multiplayer, i highly reccomend buying the game simply for nazi zombies (unless you don't have any friends, in which case steer well clear. Playing with randomers online will leave you pulling your hair out in frustration at their stupidity and unbelievably low level of skill)
The third map, Shi No Numa, should probably be avoided if you consider yourself to be somewhat skilled at Nazi Zombies. To a more skilled player this map is incredibly easy once you understand it's mechanics, and there are strategies which can lead almost any player to any round they desire. Of course if you can restrict yourself and not use a strategy like this, then it is still great fun.
I have one complaint about zombies however. The presence of glitches which allow people to obtain any round they wish means that the leaderboards for every map are not legitimate. Runs which should be in the top 50, or even top 10 are pushed down into the thousands by the abundance of glitchers and modders.
Summary:
Without nazi zombies, this would be an above average game. The addition of zombies makes it an outstanding one. A must buy.Rating:
- Fun multiplayer, lacking single playerSingle player: A little dull at points, poor level design, just seemed the same as COD3 but with better graphics. It was good at points, but the AI needs some prodding and it doesn't excel past COD4s single player in any way. If you are going to get a game for the single player don't get this.
Multiplayer: My first big gripe would be that I got the game on version 1.0.1 or something, and right now the multiplayer is all running version 1.7. This meant I had to patch it. Perhaps I missed an easy way to download the patches but I had to download and install patches 1.1->1.7 in order, and this totalled to about 5gbs of patches.
After this though it was good. I would say the weapons are a lot less diverse then in COD4 and 6, and though Treyarch have tried to achieve a style similar to IW they have left it wanting. For something like a semi automatic rifle (lets compare to an assult rifle) you have the choices to customize it with a scope and a silencer, compared to in COD4 where you can have 2 types of scope, a red dot sight, a silencer or a grenade launcher.
In the multiplayer enemies will be easier to kill when you hit them, despite the guns feeling 'weaker' as a whole. The map on this are much larger then those of COD4, much much larger. This makes for a nicely balanced game between grenades, rifles and machine guns (whereas I would say COD4 was largly about grenades and small space combat). Plus there's a lot of map variety now in 1.7.
The perks they give you don't have as much as an effect the ones in other games do, mabye making it easier on the new guy but leaving those who have unlocked everything (which by the way if you aren't going to do prestige mode is very easy) less powerful then they would be in other CODs.
Overall I enjoy the multiplayer probably more then COD4s, just. I haven't played COD6 on the PC but from the lack of dedicated servers and the small server pop limit I think this one would win out. Very nice multiplayer if you are looking for a twitch shooter, but lacking in single player.
Oh and the zombie levels are now mostly dead, most people are using cheats (which are game enabled) and it is way less about teamwork then about people wanting to hog points. I tried helping someone out when they were on the floor needing revision and they stopped the game saying I was stealing their points.Rating:
- Very Good GameIf you are hesitating about buying this game - don't! It's really good.
I know MW2 is out, but this is still worth buying. It's a quality game and if you like historical settings (I do!) then it's even better.
A must play!Rating:
- Skip Modern Warfare 2!!I used to hate Cod:WaW and could not wait for Modern Warfare 2 to come out.
But since the lack of PC support for Modern Warfare 2 It has come to my attention as to how good Treyarch are with the PC users, they are constantly patching this game and constantly relasing FREE maps which are you are required to pay for on the Xbox.
This differs vastly from the required DLC that will come with Modern Warfare 2, meaning you will need to pay for any map additions, and with no more modding or creating custom maps, the game would become very dull very fast.
Anyhow, this game is updated all of the time, and has pretty good gameplay, sure it doesn't match to Call of Duty 4, but par to Modern Warfare 2, Its a one to buy, and if you haven't already, go buy Call of duty 4 as well!Rating:
- COD WAWLove the COD range but was dissappointed with this game. Doesnt have the grip factor the others had over me. Its easy to play as I completed normal and hard levels within a week. Has the blood splatter that is lacking in other COD titles. And as an Englishman I was expecting some good old Tommy action but only had US (what a suprise) and the Russians .
