Average rating - 3.0 out of 5

Rating: 3 of out 5 - Not really a F1 simulation

This may be an old game but there are people still modding and updating it and you can still get it online so its worth looking at if you're an F1 fan, however..

The game doesn't really model the world of Formula One, its more of a racing game with management 'bits' bolted on. Just to point out some of the anomalies

1. There is no rain, ever, in any race or practice session therefore no tactical decisions to be made regarding unplanned pitstops.

2. Although there are only dry weather races you would still expect there to be tyre compound choices to be made, but no,everyone uses the same unnamed tyres which wear at the same rate.

3. Calculating fuel loads is farcical because the fuel consumption you see in practice and qualifying bears no resemblance to the actual fuel consumption in a race. Just work on an average of 3 litres a lap for every circuit and bung in a bit more to be on the safe side, no matter if you only use 1.5 litres per lap in practice.

4. You can have no commercial staff assigned to sponsors and they will still automatically re-sign with you when their contracts run out. Despite the commercial manager telling you that 'Company X is showing no interest in the team' they will stll sign on with you again and again..pointless.

5. Despite the best efforts of the modding community no way has been found to make the performance differential between teams realistic. So instead of the slowest cars being 2-3 seconds slower in qualifying they are more like 15-18 seconds, and in a race the final finishers are often 10-12 laps behind the winner without having had any mechanical problems. Also, the races don't finish when the winner crosses the line as in the real world, so its stil possible to get into the points ten minutes after the race has 'finished' in some races..

6. Drivers keep asking for ridiculous salaries after the first season with the result that the top guys like Michael Schumacher and Mika Hakkinen are too expensive for anyone to hire by the 3rd season and just sit in the non contracted driver pool forever.

7. Watching the start of the Monaco Grand prix is like watching rush hour traffic in a UK city,no one can overtake and when the front car comes to a tight hairpin all the other cars literally come to a standstill until the traffic funnels round the corner one at a time..

I could go on but you get the idea. The thing is though, that there is enough decent gameplay other than what I have noted to make the game actually quite addictive, if you are preapred to overlook the flaws. Also the mods for the game have actually improved it in some ways so thats why it still gets 4 stars for 'fun' in my rating, ultimately though its one of those games you keep reinstalling for a few days and then getting rid of it when the unrealistic parts of it get too much for you. I'm sure if you aren't a big fan of F1 that you could get a lot of entertainment out of it though, so thats why 3 stars for the overall rating.

Rating: 2 of out 5 - Great game but...

This is a great game, better then the other f1 managers by some bit, but this is my comment so it's not a universal comment. however their are a few in built flaws with this game, the AI is built so Mclaren has to win and has to have the best engine of them all, for example i did a modification to this game some time ago, made everything exactly the same technology and personal at 100 including drivers, it seems the only car that has more horsepower despite everything being level field, is the mclaren car. the other bugs are minor however it does make or break a race like for example, you race around a minardi and about to be lapped, you press pit button and the car slows to a creepers pace holding up everything until the car that wants to lap does get past and presuming no other car wants to lap your car you cars speed goes back to racing levels. absoutly strange at best.

Rating: 1 of out 5 - NO! It's as boring as any boring F1 RACING game

This is absolutely boring! I've never played it. but it is one oldest. smelliest games i have ever seen. Formula One 2002 on PS2 has better detail. and gameplay. Sony's formula one 2002.
just for once. kills Ea's f1 manager. So does Formula One 2000.
also called FormulaOne2000. It might be a little older. but was created same year!

Rating: 5 of out 5 - As addictive as they come!

I bought this game wondering weather i would find it interesting and lacking in action but i was hooked as soon as i started. Try it you might just like it yourself!

Rating: 5 of out 5 - F1 Manager

This game is amazing from the minute you install it. It has everything a formula one nut like me ever wanted. You get to pick which team you want to start with then it is down to the serious fun and addiction that seems to keep you fixed on it for ages. You can alter almost anything, from how your car works to the sponsors you have.

At the beginning of the first season you start you are given obbjectives which you have to complete to keep your job e.g Come third or higher in the constructors championship. When you do the practice, the qualifying and the race you control almost anything you could think of to do with F1. You can also watch your cars go round the circuit. This looks like you are watching t.v with commentry added on just as a bonus.

This is what all F1 fans have been waiting for a management sim not to do with football but to do with F1. If you don't buy this item you won't believe what you are missing!
