Rating: 5 of out 5 - How did they do it?

I grew up in the 60's and like all my contemporaries bought the records released by the early 60's US artists (like Duane Eddy, Elvis, Bobby Vee etc.) and also migrated in part to the 60's group invasion that took over the charts in the mid to late 60's around the world.
When I saw this absolute bargain on Amazon, I remembered the fact that Kenny Ball released so many good records that were great trad' jazz that had melodies, rhythm and most of all were good fun. On top of all that he topped the US charts and other around the world with. "Midnight in Moscow" a real nostalgic return to the 60's for me, and covered and provided new interpretations of songs like "Sukiyaki" and the "Green Leaves of Summer".
However, looking back, IO think his real achievement was to have made so many hit records of the Trad Jazz genre against all the odds when no one else could do it, apart form the fleeting one-offs of Acker bilk and Terry Lightfoot. Well done, Kenny, a good collection and great value!

Rating: 4 of out 5 - Having a Ball with Kenny

Somewhere in between Skiffle and Merseybeat, Trad Jazz became one of the UK's most popular music genres. And one of its greatest exponents was Kenny Ball & His Jazzmen. This 'Greatest Hits' collection is the perfect nostalgia trip for Trad Jazz fans and features all of Ball's original hits from the early sixties, including the worldwide smash 'Midnight In Moscow'.

Rating: 5 of out 5 - Kenny Ball? What does he call the other one?

Some of the tunes on this are nearly fifty years old and they are still swinging. Wow, he may not be considered the coolest artist on the planet...but Kenny's got Balls!!!!!

Rating: 5 of out 5 - Have a ball with Kenny

Kenny Ball, along with his mates and rivals Acker Bilk and Chris Barber, brought trad jazz to the British public conscience in the 1960s. Kenny's forte was to give the treatment, with tongue firmly in cheek (difficult when playing the trumpet!), to all sorts of popular songs of the time. Nothing was sacred - Cole Porter, Mozart, The Beatles, Walt Disney - and as a consequence his band was a regular in the Top 20 charts.

This collection contains all the hits, all original recordings and sounding amazingly sprightly for their age. The music has no pretentions, just to have fun and sound good - you may find yourself whistling or singing along to some of them.
