Editorial Review
That, after five albums, the Catherine Wheel haven't made it to the realm of the household name, does them a disservice. Over the years, they've tirelessly worked to make music that stirs, reflects and captures emotions. But more importantly, they use their imagination to create guitar music that demands listening. With Wishville, it seems that they're far from broken. Rob Dickinson's desperately heartfelt and ever-so-slightly creepy vocals, mysterious lyrics (he sings of "wedding night thighs" on drunken country-rock nightmare "Creme Caramel") and curious melodies, coupled with the distorted guitar excesses of "Sparks Are Gonna Fly", "Gasoline" and grunge-waltzer "Ballad Of A Running Man", have the Catherine Wheel sounding like a bizarre collaboration between Bush, Radiohead and Nick Cave. And it's their most inspired collection of ill-matched ideas yet. Which all goes to show that, as much as being stuck at the sidelines of the mainstream may not be what they always dreamed of, if it gives them the creative freedom to make music like this, it's probably not such a bad thing. --Dan Gennoe
