Editorial Review
The Seoul Ensemble of Traditional Music is an octet of string, wind and percussion musicians schooled in the traditions of Korea's art music. (The other source of musicians is birth into a hereditary musician family. These musicians are, to the manner born, so to speak.) Korea has its own lineage of art and courtly music. Its music is quite distinct from Chinese or Manchurian art music and indeed Korean music has been a major influence on several Asian musical traditions. At the core of this ensemble's repertoire is the music of the ancient court and the demotic folk music of Korea. Chong'ak ("correct music") is a form suffused with the principles of Confucian philosophy. As this album's "Komun'go Sanjo" illustrates, it is restrained and of aristocratic bearing. Minsog'ak ("folk music"), on the other hand, is freer. The other genre of music offered on this recording made in Cologne in October 1990 by WDR/Westdeutscher Rundfunk is a type of military processional music called kun'ak. Such are the intervals and melodies of some of this music, "Shinawi" for example, that it would sit unobtrusively in the western avant-garde classical tradition. --Ken Hunt
