Editorial Review
London's "Scratch" night is a Mecca for the capital's b-boys and b-girls. But where most compilations that reflect successful club-nights normally feature easily obtainable and obvious track listings, Scratch Vol. 1 is in keeping with the night's ethos of going that extra mile to entertain and give value for money. Although the promoters have brought in a number of high profile guests such as Macy Gray and Talib Kweli, most of the cuts here are not obvious choices--they are all bona fide hip-hop classics and like absolute gold dust to any serious collector. With cuts like Main Source's "Snake Eyes", Masterminds "Bring It Back', The Freestyle Fellowship's "Hot Potato", Diamond D's "Best Kept Secret", Souls of Mischief's "93 til Infinity", Digital Underground's "The Return of the Crazy One", Love Bug Starski and Harlem World Crew's "Positive Life", Tribe's "Lyrics to Go", DJ Serious' "Popped" and J Live's incredibly dope "Them That's Not", this LP makes for an essential and enjoyable romp through the funky side of hip-hop. --Paul Sullivan

Rating:
- Funkier than James Brown's jock strap
If you buy one hip hop album this year make it this one! From the mellow, jazzy sounds of A Tribe Called Quest's "Lyrics" to the super funky dancefloor filler "Positive Life" by Lovebug Starski, the quality of tunes on this album starts off great and keeps getting better. While 'Scratch Vol 1' might not appeal to the fans of so called commercial 'Hip Hop'(Puff Daddy et al), anyone who is interested in real Hip Hop will appreciate the depth of quality and variety of this suberb album.
Rating:
- Daisy age inspired beats from the mighty Rawkus stable
The ever reliable Rawkus brings some old skool tinged daisy age sounding beats that drip class. MC's from Digital Underground's Humpty thru to D-Sisive's lyrical beat down of the 'pop' scene (with a tilt at Mel B & co) this is an LP that never misses. Less edgy than the Lyricist Lounge compilations, but this a collection you'll listen to back to back. Get it sooner rather than later.
Rating:
- Wicked, Large beats, phat tunes, sweet lyrics, Nice!
This is one of the best new releases out at the moment in the hip-hop genre featuring a tribe called quest's amazing "lyrics" amongst other fantastic hip-hop sounds... well worth the money!
