Editorial Review
Exactly how Eminem was able to assemble so many credible emcees of today and yesteryear (Jay-Z, Rakim) to endorse his Holly'hood coming-out party, 8 Mile, is anyone's guess. What is clear, however, is that (dare we say it) the Shady One might be growing up. On "Lose Yourself" Em abandons his callous, hardcore posturing to write thoughtful hood-centric coming-of-age lyrics that would make Melle Mel proud. On "Battle" Gang Starr's Guru tears through a sick beat from rap's most prolific producer DJ Premier. Sadly, Nas wastes more valuable studio time dissing Jay-Z (ho-hum) on "You Wanna Be Me". Interestingly, once you get past the living-legend love-in and peep the skills from Em's lesser-known Shady Records roster of below-ground wordsmiths--50 Cent ("Wanksta") or Obie Trice ("Adrenaline Rush"), you might urge Em to consider giving up his thespian pursuits to become a full-time record executive. Not even the baffling inclusion of Macy Gray's humdrum "Time of Your Life" can sink this project. --Dalton Higgins

- Might wanna watch the film before you buy
Eminem like him or hate him, made a huge impact in the year 2000 so much so, that he got to make a semi autobiographical film just 2 years later featuring half his hip hop affiliates, Kim Basinger and Brittany Murphy (it's a strange world). Anyway was it any good? well, i'm not here to rate the film but the soundtrack doesn't really work, not as a coherent release anyway. There is no real connection from one song to the next beyond the fact that some of them appeared on the film, i guess i can't complain too much considering it's a soundtrack and not a studio album but soundtrack albums can be cohesive listens (into the wild) is a prime example. The album isn't without it's highlights though, which come in the form of the title track, "lose yourself" and "love me" which just happens to be the first three tracks on the album rendering the rest of it pointless perhaps, not quite as you'd miss 50 cent make his first major appearance and that would be tragic wouldn't it? lol jokes aside the rest of the album is still relatively consistent from that point with some filler floating about, that sadly seems to be a mandatory custom on most 21st century hip hop albums. To sum this up anyway, i'd buy this if you enjoyed the film but beyond that you wouldn't but doing your ears a massive disservice if you decided to pass.

- 8 Mile
`8 Mile' is the soundtrack from the film of the same name and as you'd expect from a film starring Eminem, this CD features him on various tracks, as well as being produced by him. To be strict with the term this isn't quite a soundtrack (as the cover points out) as this also includes many tracks that were inspired by the film, but that doesn't detract from the solid music on offer. You get a wide variety of artists, including Eminem, Obie Trice, 50 Cent, D12, Jay-Z, xzibit, Macy Gray, Nas, Boomkat, Rakim, Young Zee and Gangstarr. All pretty notable artists at the time the film was released. Some songs are better than others and the quality of the lyrical content fluctuates from track to track, some artists are obviously better than others! For a good introduction into Hip Hop I'd say this is a good place to turn, it has enough variety to keep you interested and to help you make up your mind about what artists and style you like. It is also a good place to turn if you liked the music in the film and want more of the same. A solid collection of music and worth a look if you're after a hip hop compilation.

- It may not do what it says on the tin, but it's worth the cash.
As previous reviews have suggested, this compilation disc doesn't really do the job that its front cover claims, as the songs in the movie are pretty much absent. However, for Eminem fans and just rap fans, this is a release well worth buying, as the standard of quality is high throughout.
Obviously the most important material here is that of Eminem, most of which is exclusive to this disc. You get 'Lose Yourself,' one of his best and least profane tracks, with some of his finest rhymes, as well as the title track, a very classy track. There's also 'Rabbit Run,' later a b-side to 'Sing For The Moment,' a single three-minute verse that's more or less about having writer's block and a song with D12 that's well worth a look. It's all good material.
The other odds and ends that appear here are also mostly worth listening to. Whilst 50 Cent's contributions are worthless, as is his own material, there is a stellar track from Jay-Z, Nas and the legendary Rakim. All in all, whilst this disc is by no means 'music from and inspired by 8 mile,' it's simply a great rap compilation with some excellent rare Eminem songs on it. Put it in your collection with his four studio albums and greatest hits.

- 8 mile was not too bad but
This makes up for it the music alot better from likes of 50,jayz,macy gray and d12.Eninem a dam good rapper but this album not his strongest album but close. Really ive only got Encore and the eninem show which is something. What makes this album so strong is its most varied out the other 2 albums i got of his its defently worth getting.

- they've gone the extra mile
It's not a bad album though some tracks seem a little tedious and boring for likings. Of course the dime in the album 'Lose Yourself' and 50 Cent's 'Places To Go' are good, the rest doesn't really live up to the movie itself. Not bad but not brilliant
