Editorial Review

In 1988, REM were a cult on the cusp of major success. In 1992 they were somewhere close to being the biggest band in the world. In 2003, they're marginalised again, a middle-aged institution purportedly on the wane. Still, uninformed listeners to In Time might find it tricky to work out which songs come from which era. The 18 singles collected here in non-chronological order show a band that's operated at a terrifyingly high standard throughout the period, so that less lauded songs like "The Great Beyond" stand proud alongside the familiar anthems from the early 1990s. Of course, these compilations are sent to irritate loyalists, whose relief at the inclusion of "E-Bow the Letter" (a mesmerising duet with Patti Smith from 1996) will be undermined by the bewildering absence of 1992's tearjerking epiphany "Find the River". For a more comprehensive survey of REM's excellence, you'll also need The Best of REM, the highlights of their elliptical early years. One suspects a box set which tells the full story of this enduring band can't be that far away. For now, though, In Time will do well enough. --John Mulvey

Rating: 5 of out 5 - Automatic purchase for all people

Cream of indie rock megastars Warner Bros. Years material which plunders heavily from 90's classics Automatic For the People and Out of Time. Showcases perfectly their trademark bitter sweet songwriting & Stipe's empathetic & intelligent lyrics, while underlining the terrifyingly high standard throughout that period as a whole. Try Not To Breathe, The Sidewinder Sleeps Tonite, Man On The Moon, What's The Frequency Kenneth and Orange Crush would be enough on their own, but add in fan fav E Bow The Letter and new track 'The Great Beyond' and its a must have for everyone.

Rating: 3 of out 5 - The selection of songs could have been better

A compilation album from REM, from 1988 to 2003, from "Green" to "Reveal", the period when it was commercially at its peak (we can argue whether it was their artistic peak as well; to me their best period in that regard was during the last years for the IRS label). Obviously, what makes a compilation album is a great job in selecting the material. There are many great songs here ("electrolite", "losing my religion", "man on the moon", "stand", "the great beyond", "bad day", "the sidewinder sleeps tonite"), but too many good songs were left out as well (for instance, "pop song 89", "world leader pretend", "get up", the untitled song from green, "near wild heaven", "shiny happy people"), and mediocre songs were selected instead ("animal", "all the right friends", "at the most beautiful"). So this is not the knockout album it could have been. Of course, this might just be my subjective opinion of what their best songs were during this period, but many songs left out of this album have been favorites of many of their fans, so it's hard to understand the rationale of the selection. I felt the compilation of the IRS years, Eponymous, did a far better job in presenting the band's highlights.

Rating: 5 of out 5 - POP PERFECTION

THE BEST BAND TO COME OUT OF AMERICA.
The songs on this album are a like the best lyrics of Dylan combined with thw tunes of Springsteen...

Rating: 5 of out 5 - POP PERFECTION

This album is so good, so moving , so powerful its hard to believe REM aint from London.
America makes rubbish television but this album proves they can make great music.
EVERYBODY HURTS is one of the best records ever made and REM are the best thing to come out of the USA since Iggy Pop, Courtney Cox, Lou Reed and Bruce Springsteen...

Rating: 5 of out 5 - GOOD ALBUM

This is the first time I have bought a REM Cd and so far, the tracks I have heard are great. Every song on this album is great.
