Rating: 5 of out 5 - she's a queen bee in this town!

So many artists have their back catalogues mauled by profiteering record companies, with the result being loads of boring and cheap compilation CDs. Not so Shakespear's Sister - there have been 2 excellent compilations from Warners in the last few years. "The Best Of", with input from La Fahey herself, had all the hits, rare stuff and new material from Siobhan Fahey. Plus a DVD of all the videos. This one is a companion volume, with remixes, rarities and more!

SS's remixes hold up well - for 1980s 12" versions they don't bore or sound too dated. The non-album tracks are a delight.

Just a few tracks let it down. The acoustic version of Stay is nice - the guitar is pretty, Marcella sings it nicely, but Siobhan's verse lets it down. She sings like she can't be bothered - which could well have been the case. Siobhan's verse and the bridge were always the best parts of the song, and made it Shakespear's Sister - and neither are here.

Prehistoric Daze (from the Flintstones soundtrack) is worth having for its relative rarity, but let's face it, it's not very good!

And the remix of I Can Drive is nothing like the excellent original (just a few looped words), but again has rarity value.

Nevertheless, this is a great album at a bargain price. For the best introduction get "The Best Of" - but do get this one at the same time!

Rating: 5 of out 5 - A steal at the price - original remixes and promos.

Siobhan and Marcella may have had their heyday 15 years ago but this low price mixes and b-sides collection shows just how varied their music was. It is a perfect companion to the "Best Of" and includes some original extended mixes not generally available on CD before. Highlights include the 12" ext Break My Heart, the promo vinyl only Pretty Boy (ok it's dated, but a treat for fans nonetheless), the Heavenly Remix of Heroine (twisted into something sparse and acidic/house) and the promo only Rachel Auburn mix of I Can Drive.

One mix of interest is Black Sky, despite it's length this is not the same as the Black Widow Mix (or Black Dub) on the original vinyl/CD single releases. The sparse beat and vocal sample intro appears to be brand new, then we go into extracts from the dub, and only the last 2 mins are lifted straight from the end of the original Black Widow Mix. The result is very dubby, building far better than its namesake.

Nice to see Suddenly (from the Drive single) here too, as it's brooding electronics and glam nod fit perfectly, and the lyrics are quite vitriolic in places!

Slight shame about the generally clumsy front-cover artwork and no mixer details. Also the possible order of the last 4 tracks is a little uncomfortable (Auburn mix after slow "3" album sampler didn't really work for me).

But this is a little gem for fans, and may even entice some new listeners. Long may she reign!

Rating: 3 of out 5 - Diehard Fans Only - Casual Listeners Avoid!

I bought this cos it was cheap . .and you get what you pay for as the saying goes. This isn't a Greatest Hits cd as I thought. Every track is remixed within an inch of it's life & whilst I enjoy them as a fan, these aren't the classic songs you remember. Marcella Detroit has more or less been remixed out of existence which is galling considering she co-wrote a lot of the tracks! If you're after the songs you remember don't buy this. I now know there is a 'proper' Greatest Hits cd. I recommend that . .unless you are a die-hard Fahey fan & completist.

Rating: 5 of out 5 - A delicious treat

This collection of Shakespears Sister b-sides, fan favourites, rare (and ultra rare) remixes was an unexpected treat. Goldfrapp fans - if you love electropop with a twist of sexy glam, this will be right up your alley.

It's worth the price of admission for William Orbit's masterful Revolution mix of Run Silent and the sleek BTO remix of Good Cruel Word alone. But the whole album has been lovingly compiled, and is a beautiful supplement to Shakespears Sister's three albums and greatest hits collection.

You're History, Break My Heart and Black Sky are deservedly extended while Heroine is deliciously warped and Mr Wrong flirts with Motown. Even the trio of dated tracks (you know who you are) stand up as period curiosities. And who else could sing: "Will someone please remind her she's got acute angina?"

My only gripe is that Marcella Detroit has been Photoshopped off the cover shot. While the band was Siobhan Fahey's baby, its greatest chart success included Detroit, who was always more than a backing singer. This might deter casual fans from checking out Long Live the Queens, which would be a great shame.
