Rating: - Quite simply, a MASTERPIECE

Having been a great admirer of Chris Rea's older music (On The Beach, Road To Hell, God's Great Banana Skin, The Blue Cafe) I was apprehensive when his Jazzee Blue label started up.

But after pulling out all the stops with Dancing Down The Stony Road and producing a simply glorious jazz album in the form of the Blue Jukebox, I didn't think Chris could better them - but he has surpassed himself with this masterpiece, Blue Guitars.

You may be initally be put off by the vast number of songs (128) but it is simply Chris Rea immersed in the music he loves so much - the blues. And any blues lover or Chris Rea fan for that matter will love this set. It is pure blues indulgence as Rea takes the listener on a journey through the evolution of the blues from early African musical scales to the latin blues that are prominent in today's industry.

There are surprises on every disc and Chris has used some samples from older tracks in his blues adventure. Look out for a "Nothing To Fear" sample on "Celtic Blues" and the familiar sound of "All Summer Long" on "How I Know It's You."

"Break Another Piece of My Heart" and "Rules of Love" have to be may favourites and this is a fantastic fond farewell from the slide guitar legend who will now perform under the name of his new band Fire Flies after a farewell tour. Hopefully he'll save his best Glasgow!

Rating: - Unique in so many ways

It's taken from Christmas Day until now to finally listen to all 11 albums!! The DVD comes next. I must admit there were times when I thought of reaching for the paracetamol, so depressing were some of the songs, but then it is the Blues! But overall, it was a brilliant listening experience.
What I find incredible is that Chris Rea had the guts to create this masterpiece in the first place. True, not every song works but then with 11 Albums to choose from it would have been a miracle if every song had been perfect. I can't imagine any other modern artist having the balls to have written, made and published so many songs in such a short space of time. This will probably never happen again.
Overall Blue Guitars works for me and if you are also a Chris Rea disciple, if you understand where he is coming from and why he had to create this unique set of musical genius, then you will not be disappointed.
Chris Rea is both King of the Beach and now King of the Blues. I hope you enjoy Blue Guitars.

Rating: - bargin of the decade

Insomnia found me listening to a Chris Rea interview on radio 4 at 3:00 am a few weeks ago. Subject "Blue Guitars", ordered it next morning and am blown away by the music, the production, and the presentation.Even my wife watched the DVD and was inspired to carry on and absorb the music. If Mr. Rea reads these reivews he should know I feel guilty paying such a pittance for such a major work. I challenge anyone to be dissapointed.

Rating: - Blues Blessings

If you like the blues at all, you must buy this wonderful piece of work. Beautifully presented at a bargain price, all of the CDs (11 music CDs plus one DVD with a documentary) include all styles of blues. This is real blues - not over-polished but full of emotion.
All the musicians combine to form some wonderful music.
It may sound trite, but listening to this is like being present at some kind of special event.
I've never bought a Chris Rea recording in my life before (not that I don't like his stuff - I'm just not a die hard fan) but this was worth every penny.

A great Christmas present - beautiful book along with really interesting music - highly recommended for anyone who likes Chris Rea or blues generally.
