What's the problem with One Hot Minute?
Picture the scene if you will. The Chili's previous album (BSSM) had been one of the biggest albums ever, excellent stuff. How can you top that? You can't, that's how.
The problem with One Hot Minute is that it's constantly compared to BSSM and Californication. You can't compare it to Californiaction; that's not fair, they're very different albums. Before you even buy One Hot Minute, you know the bad press it has, it's dark, experimental.
But it's 2005 now, we're not riding off the back of BSSM, so we can subjectively analyse this album...
Yes, this isn't the best album by the Chili's but it still has some good, perhaps great, songs on it. 'My Friends' is one of the best acoustic songs they've done. 'Coffee Shop' is a hard rockin' funky song, good stuff, 'Aeroplane' and the delicate 'Falling Into Grace' are good as well.
But here's the thing that riles me about the album, it's a little too experimental. Four songs in point. 'Warped' starts off in wierd synthesisers before, after 2 minutes, finally launching into a good song, 'Deep Kick''One Big Mob' and 'One Hot Minute' all start off as cracking songs, before completely changing the song so much, it sounds like a different song. It's alomst like the Chili's thought 'Hmm... this is a good song, how can we ruin it?'
This is a crying shame, 'One Hot Minute' in particular, could've been a classic. This album deserves 3 stars. Some people may find that harsh, but if BSSM is worth 5, and Californication is worth 4, then I think it's realistic.

- One hot album!
I will go through each track to give my critique on it. First of all, even without frusciante, this album is still very good. It doesn't recapture the magic for blood sugar magik and it is the more heavy metal album out of all the albums (Mainly because navarro is in the band), but it is very good and still remains adamant with the use of funk and rock.
1: Warped - This song is quite good. I feel that it has a slow start and the lyrics are hard to distinguish. However, it is a good song after listening to it a good few times. 9/10
2: Aeroplane - Funky or what?! This song is awesome and definitely one of the best tracks on the album. 10/10
3: Deep Kick - This song takes a very long time to get into especially as it is talking for quite a while. However, it is a good workup to the actual song 7/10
4: My Friends - Awesome! So enchanting and haunting lyrics. This is by far the best track on the album. 10/10
5: Coffee Shop - Like Warped, It is a really good song but it is hard to distinguish the lyrics. The bass line is so funky though. 9/10
6: Pea - This is the only track on the album that I like. Its just a pure two minutes of swearing and is a pointless song. I see flea's point in this song though! 6/10
7: One big mob - Heavy, man! This song is too long, but is so cool - "One big mob, o yeah o yeah" 9/10
8: Walkabout - So funky! So smooth! It has a nice feel to it and brings in the blend of funk and rock. A good background song. 8/10
9: Tearjerker - A good song but it is a bit too dramatic. Kiedis has created enchanting lyrics in this nice, thoughtful piece tough. 8/10
10: One hot minute - this is my personal favourite on the album. This song is so enchanting and I keep coming back to it. This is the most heavy metal song on the album though. However, I think its great! 10/10
11: Falling into Grace - Another song that brings in the blend of rock and funk, mainly funk though. However, a catchy rhythm. 9/10
12: Shallow be thy name - I don't like this one because I don't think it captures my attention as much as any of the other songs. 5/10
13: Transcending - Thoughful lyrics and an enchanting song. Not the best finish to the album though! 7/10
My total verdict: 8/10 A very good album! A definite recommendation for a hardcore chilis fan!

Too many people decry this album for breaking the renowned Chili's lineup of John Frusciante, Anthony Kiedis, Chad Smith and Flea. For this album (1995) Dave Navarro formerly of Jane's Addiction took John's place and the Chili's sound did change a little for it. The funk so evident in albums like Blood Sugar Sex Magik and Freakey Styley takes a back seat here to make way for a heavier guitar part and more hard-rock sound. It's a testament to the Chilis that they don't lose their individuality and are still relatively recognisable as the Uplift Mofo Party Band when they could easily have become Jane's Addiction MKII. The starting track 'Warped' is fantastic and one of the highlights of the album (also it featured the most wacky & daring of RHCP videos to date when it was released as a single)the intro and the vocal delivery are refreshingly wild. The strangest track award goes to 'Deep Kick' which has a spoken-word intro and great lyrics about crazy living. It's a good song although people have claimed (possibly with good reason) that it's a sign of the Chili's heroin addled mentality. It's a good indicator of many of the songs on One Hot Minute though as it changes throughout, appearing to have been broken into skillfully moulded sections by the creators. The most moving song in my opinion is 'Tearjerker', widely regarded as a tribute to the Chili's fallen friend Kurt Cobain. Other standout tracks are 'Shallow be thy Game' which blasts organised religion and 'Coffee Shop' which was released as a fantastic single. Pea is good too so long as you don't have any issues with unneccesary swearing whereas My Friends seems too much like a half-hearted follow-up to Under The Bridge (single release 1993 off of Blood Sugar Sex Magik 1991) for my liking. Not the Chili's best and a bit of an odditity this album is the sign of a band who were and still are willing to push and challenge their own constraints and imaginations rather than allowing themselves to become bogged down in genres and precidents.

- Stunning album but without John Frusciante
This is quite simply a stunning RHCP album. Following on from Blood Sugar Sex Magik and without John Frusciante the band chose the amazing Dave Navaro to play lead. The album is not quite what you may expect but once you get into its groove it proves to be one of the very best albums by RHCP. An emotional roller coaster the style trips between psychedelic funk in the style of funkadelic, heavier than usual punk funk rock and acoustic numbers ala the bands later albums. These variations in musical styles make the album one that can be played time and time again. As far as the lyrical content goes, again it's a mix, with sad, happy, defiant and disturbed doggerel. The guitar playing is layered and simply stunning - DN is one of the best. Flea's bass is sensational, pulverising the listener into submission. In summary if you like older RHCP you should definitely buy this album, if you only know post Californication, then still buy it and give your ears a treat.

- A brave move
before i start, i must just say that "christophe_du_banane" is obviously a fool and is evidently more pleased by the chilis recent commercial route and fails to appreciate brave moves like this album. one hot minute is a very different chilis album to any others, as it is heavier, but still encorporates their funkier sund on tracks like "walkabout" and "aeroplane",
this in mind though, it still has the balllads that clearly inspired the more recent "californication" and "by the way" eg. "my friends" and "tearjearker". the tracks are
1. Warped- an average track, slightly weird at the beginning, obscure lyrics 5/10
2. Aeroplane- a very funky and chilled out track ,good lyrics, one of the highlights of the album 9/10
3. Deep Kick- starts with Kiedis saying poetic things and then explodes into a funk/rock song 6/10
4. My Friends- An Amazing, Yet Depressing Ballad, Another highlight, sounds Californication-esque 10/10
5. Coffee shop- heavy rock, yet very funky, Good chorus 8/10
6.Pea- More an interlude than a song, Flea singing Along with his Bass, Lulls you and then startles you when Flea suddenly sings "so i can f*** your s*** up!" Made me Laugh. 7/10
7. One Big Mob- Ridiculously Catchy Chorus, Quite Funky, But The Sounds of a Baby Crying in the Middle Are a bit annoying 8/10
8. Walkabout-My favorite track, Navarro's Guitar is The Funkiest Thing EVER on this track, and with a sort-of drum solo at the beginning, which you dont see much anymore. 10/10
9. Tearjerker- good but i kind of got the feeling i they weren't being serious on this one, Good Intro though. 8/10
10. One Hot Minute- Weird riff at the beginning, not the best, takes its time to grow on you 6/10
11. Falling into Grace- Nice and funky, but cant follow up "Walkabout", good lyrics though 7/10
12. Shallow be Thy Game- Cool Bass on This Track, Good Lyrics on The Chorus, doesn't feel like one of the end Songs though 8/10
13. Trancending- Great Riffs, great lyrics, funky Song, but with a very heavy ending, Kiedis sounds angry on the end of this song, perhaps not the best to finish though, never mind 8/10
Put this all together and you get a fantastic album, which combines all the best aspects of the Chilis and adds some new ones too!
