- Where's John gone?
This album is great, and Dave Navarro is a cool guitarist, but you can really hear the difference between this and the albums featuring John Frusciante. The tracks are
1.WARPED:- At first I hated this song, but it really grows on you and is now one of my favourites! Chad shows his real talents on drums in this track.
2.AEROPLANE:- This song is definately thee best track on the album! Flea's bass line is so funky throughout, but especially just before the kids start to sing towards the end. amazing! Probably one of the best chili's songs ever!
3.DEEP KICK:- This song starts off with Anthony Kiedis just talking about rubbish for ages with a myserious tune in the background but then suddenly dives into a frenzy of crazy funky rock! I like it!
4.MY FRIENDS:- Very nice acoustic guitar and hauntingish lyrics. weird video though. Overall, i like the song, but not as much as some of the other ones.
5.COFFEE SHOP:- Brilliant! Absurd lyrics, catchy tune, wild drums, flea-style bass, what more can I say?
6.PEA:- Just flea singing with the bass and. A cute little song against homophobes. Don't play it too loud while your parents are around!
7.ONE BIG MOB:- ("Aw yea aw yea!") Such a cool song! Starts off big and noisy and then fades away into a really soft thing with A baby crying for some of it which is really annoying, but then you can hear the drums in the distance and it slowly builds up back to big and noisy again! Yay!
8.WALKABOUT:- This is such a groovy little song! It's great for chiling! Anthony's voice sends shivers up your spine - in a good way though!
9.TEARJERKER:- This song is OK, but a little too...Dramatized?
10.ONE HOT MINUTE:- The title track of the album isn't the best and the guitar part thet just keeps going on and on and on at the end is annoying, but other than that it's good! I like the lyrics!
11.FALLING INTO GRACE:- This track is certainly different than anything they have done before, but then isn't everything? This song is funky though. Kristen Vigard (Who does the backing vocals on this song) does a lot for "Mothers Milk" aswell.
12.SHALLOW BE THY NAME:- This song is powerful! Especially the part when it says "You'll never burn me". Really cool.
13.TRANSCENDING:- The last track of the album is really good. Towards the end, it sounds really pained. If your in a really really bad mood with everyone, Play this full volume and jump everywhere and scream! - it makes you feel better! - Honestly it does!
So as you can see, There isn't one bad review up there so Buy this album and see for yourself!

this album for me is one of the chilis greatest.including blood, sugar, sex, magik.for BSSM was difficult to grasp, although a fantastic album I never really got sucked into it as I have with other albums. One Hot minute offers a funky break and keeps you alert.True, it could be said that it is difficult to listen to, although whats difficult about every single tune demanding your upmost attention.surely thats our job as music consumers to consume the music not just sit passively as it floats into our ears.Every tune in OHM demands appreciation in its uniqueness from tunes either side of it.there is no beter example than "Pea".For me everytune says "listen to me!" But they are not fighting witheachother, they compliment each other, they wake you up and cause you to question your ideas of a good album!I think OHM is better even that the 'oh so great "BY the WAY" and
which for me is more generic poular rock, a bland money maker, that floats nicely into our ears without us hearing it. Rather than the unique blend of hip hop, funk and rock that makes you sit up and listen..If you want to hear the chilis at their best listen to this then BSSM and make up your own mind.

- Pleasure spiked with pain
It really annoys me how there are now so many people getting into the chilis because of their last 2 albums californication and By the way. In my opinion these albums were a huge step backwards for the band. On the last two albums the group have purposesly "dumbed down" the musicianship in an attempt to go in a more commercial direction. (and by the sales numbers, it has obviously worked.) Letting Fruciante back into the band was a huge mistake. That herion has obviously had the reverse effect of what the stuff is supposed to do, heighten your creativity.(by saying this I do not mean to endorse drug use) I mean the man has gone from absolute genius( see BSSM) to a complete dud. A good example of this can be found on track 4 of the By the way album, where he executes possibly one of the worst solos I have ever heard in my life( jesus h christ,he only uses 3 notes!).
So..., now to one hot minute. I dont know about everyone else, but I like listening to music that has a mixture of depressing moments and uplifting moments, ie pleasure spiked with pain!.(those of u who didnt notice, Anthony was being HONEST about his addiction when he wrote that lyric) . Subltety + honesty are definitely what the last two albums lack. Oh and Dave navarro & the rest of the band put on one of the most stunning displays of musicianship ever recorded. Im a firm believer of the phrase, "if youve got it, flaunt it", so why the hell havent they been flaunting it on their last two albums?. Is it just me ,or has what was once the best rythym section in the world been made to take a back seat to the new "pop" direction of Keidis and Fruciante?( Flea's guest appearance on the mars volta album clearly shows that he still has what it takes to be the best ).
Anyway in short (or in this case, long), all the people who criticise one hot minute, and say its hard to listen to,....thats the whole idea!. What any REAL music lover knows, is that the best music usually takes numerous listens to grow on you. If you are looking for an album that combines flawless musicanship, exellent progressive song writing, emotional honesty, and the ability to get better with every listen, then one hot minute fits this category perfectly. Oh, but I must warn you, it may be a tad "heavy" for those who actually like their new direction. Sorry if I sound like a complete bastard, but im just a tad opinionated when it comes to music :)

- Hard album to make
After 1991's classic album Blood Sugar Sex Magik, the Red Hot Chili Peppers were massive. They had become household names and had several hit singles off that album. The euphoria however was short lived, as mid-way through the tour that followed the album, guitarist John Frusciante became disillusioned with fame and left the band.
The Chili's somehow had to fill the huge void left by Frusciante, and had a number of different fill-in guitarists to complete the tour. They eventually settled with Dave Navarro, formerly of Janes Addiction fame, and in 1995, they set about working on the follow up to what was their best album to date.
Obviously upon its release, expectations were high. There was obviously going to be a slightly different change in sound, as Frusciante had such a unique style. But the resulting album 'One Hot Minute' was released, and was not well received. The sound of the band had changed quite considerably, and in many peoples eyes, not for the better. However, in my own personal view, this album shows a different side of the Chili's, but not a worse side. I really like the album, its very varied from start to finish. Dark in some places, jovial in others. Here is a summary of my opinions of the tracks.
'Warped' - A noisy start to the album, at first it seems a bit too disjointed, but it is definitely a grower, and one of the highlights
'Aeroplane' - A true Chili's classic. Funky as hell, and a great colourful video.
'Deep kick' - Kiedis spends a couple of minutes waffling on about nonsense, before breaking into a bouncy/heavy/funky track
'My Friends' - Ballad number 1 on the album, and almost sounds a little like the classic under the bridge. Nice track.
'Coffee shop' - A great funk rock fest, with bizarre lyrics, and a brilliant slap bass line. Flea at his best!
'Pea' - Flea by himself on bass and vocals, a little silly song against homophobe's! Don't listen with your mum around!
'One big mob' - Another bouncy rock track with more strange lyrics from Kiedis. Also some bizarre sounds in the middle of a crying baby.
'Walkabout' - A brilliant funk-fuelled track. Very simple, groovy walking bass line. Album highlight for me.
'Tearjerker' - Ballad number 2. Apparently written about the late Kurt Cobain, as Kiedis sings 'i like your whiskers, and the dimple in your chin, your pale blue eyes'. A really nice track.
'One hot minute' - I'm not too keen on this title track, mainly for the reason it has a really annoying bit in the middle with 2 notes being repeated over and over and over....
'Falling into Grace' - A nice fairly funky track, with bizarre chanting in the middle of it.
'Shallow be thy game' - Another album highlight, a brilliant funk rock number, and Chili's at their best.
'Transcending' - Peaceful sounding start to the song, but changes into quite an aggressive song by the end. Good song, but strange way to end the album.
So, all in all, i do think it is a good album. By no means is it as good as Blood Sugar, but i don't think they will ever better that. I prefer this album to 'Californication' and 'By the way', as its that bit more rocky and funky. if you like the more upbeat side of the Chili's, you will not be disappointed with this. Although the Chili's were going through personal battles with drink and drugs, they still managed to come up with a great album.

- The Best Peppers Album Yet
I have liked the Red Hot Chili Peppers since their most popular album came out: Californication. I don't think I know anyone my age (17) who doesn't own that CD. I was only twelve when it came out, but I have loved the Peppers ever since. I attended their concert approximately a year ago, that was a truly terrific experience.
I decided, last year, that after having been to the concert - owning By the Way, Californication and Blood Sugar Sex Magik - it was time to become acquainted with the less well known Chili Peppers CDs. Fortunately I had just received a lot of cash from my grandmother, so I went out and bought Red Hot Chili Peppers, Uplift Mofo Party Plan, and One Hot Minute. I must say, I was pleasantly surprised. One Hot Minute, although it has Dave Navarro on guitar while John Frusciante was elsewhere coping with his heroin addiction, has to be the best Peppers album yet.
On One Hot Minute I get the feeling that they paid more attention to the instrumental parts than on Blood Sugar Sex Magik, By the Way and Californication. I don't mean that the lyrics are bad - it's more that you don't hear them as well as you do on the other albums, the band seems to focus more on the music. The lyrics themselves are, I think, better than on any of the other albums, actually; they seem to have more meaning. All the other albums give you the idea that they just picked random words and phrases that sounded, as my English teacher would put it, euphonious. An example is in Fortune Faded:
So divine, hell of an elevator
All the while my fortune faded
Nevermind the consequences of the crime this time
My fortune faded
Not that I don't like that about the Peppers, that is one of their qualities that I find rather endearing: they manage to sing about nothing and still make it mindblowing.
Another thing I like about this album is that, like many of the more recent RHCP CDs, it can really be listened to as a whole. The way the songs seem to match and belong in a specific order is very clever. On the other hand the tracks are also great to listen to seperately.
This album is less funky then any of its predecessors, and also less 'tight' than Californication and By the Way. It seems to me that especially Californication is rather polished, too polished, one might say. One Hot Minute sounds more like a really, really amazing jam-session. It's more relaxed: it cares less about it's appearance to the popular masses than its successors do.
I think that the group has grown a lot since Blood Sugar Sex Magik and some of the seriously RANDOM stuff that came before that - those were a lot more fun-loving and young-sounding albums. This one seems more mature, more grown-up. Especially 'My Friends' and 'Tearjerker' (which, being the sappy songs, would naturally appeal to a girl my age), but also 'Warped', 'One Big Mob' and 'Falling into Grace' are very interesting and, please pardon the expression, unique.
I have heard many people say they didn't like this album as much as the others because of Dave Navarro, but to be honest, I don't think that was a bad thing at all! Maybe this is not an album that will appeal to those who herald Californication as the best RHCP album they ever listened to, but for those of you who would like a mixture between By the Way and Blood Sugar Sex Magik, this is the album for you. It mixes the best of their late 90's early 00's (what do you call that- the noughties?) mainstream sound with the height of their 80's funk career.
Anyone who calls themself a Chili Peppers fan and doesn't have this album yet, go buy it now!
