Average rating - 4.5 out of 5

Rating: 5 of out 5 - Contains (in my opinion) the greatest song of all time!!

The other reviewers have pretty much said everything that needs to be said. But I would add that anyone who has an ounce of angst in their body has never lived until they've heard 'Head Like a Hole' blasted at them at full volume. Possibly the most rebellious song ever written for our (capitalistic) times. The rest of the album is great too.But to be honest if (after Head Like A Hole) the album was just pure silence. I would still have bought it!

Rating: 4 of out 5 - NIN Fans Only

Pretty Hate Machine is doing pretty damn well for being eleven years old, and although at times it shows it's age in the heavy use of synth sounds and the 80's beats, it's still a very catchy and frantic albulm. A warning though, if you aren't already a Nine Inch Nails fan, I wouldn't reccomend buying this. It's better to start with The Fragile and work your way back. After all, The Fragile is Trent Reznor's finest album.

Rating: 4 of out 5 - A debut from a genius?

Considering that Trent Reznor lead singer and masermind behind Nine inch nails has now been given the nickname "lord of darkness" by many music reviewers, this debut isnt something you would expect from a band with a huge gothic following! The album may not appeal to all in the world of "KoRn" and "Limp Bizkit" beacuase of its eighties drums and maybe a little over use of synth and busy sounds but in its day it was hugely popular and appealed to a mass audience and that was becuase of its edge and extremely catchy tunes. The album starts off with the brilliant "head like a hole" (the "smells like teen spirit" of its day) and this song brings you into listening more because of its instant sound, the songs extremely catchy chorus was probably the main reason for the songs popularity! The next song is "Terrible lie" which is another classic its 2 chord guitar parts in the chorus go beautifully with the synth and hidden atmospherics but also keeping its fierce and gothic edge. The rest of the album is a bit of a let down after the fantastic beginning though songs like "Something i can never have" and "Sin" are brilliant. Songs like "down in it" with its hip hop drum beat, and "Sanctified" with its more than a hint of David Bowie bass line are a bit tedious. That leaves the rest of the album which isnt really anything special but it is still above the rest of the music produced in the eighties and put Trent Reznor on the path to what he is now....................

Rating: 5 of out 5 - Contains my favourite song

This album has been in my collection for coming on 11 years now and I still listen to it today! Although it sounds a little more dated than The Downward Spiral and is ultimately not as spectacular, it is just as important to any NIN fan, in fact PHM contains my favourite song of all time - 'Something I can never have'.

Rating: 5 of out 5 - For Pretty Hate Machine Read Perfect Halo Music..

The First NIN Release was my most recent purchase. I bourght the Downward Spiral and was Hooked..I bourght Fragile and was utterly Gobsmacked. Then I got Broken and Fixed and nearly fell over. Then I bourght PHM and was untterly speachless. Trent Reznor did by far and away his best work on this album. It's serves more purpose to me than anyother of his releases. Songs like Head Like A Hole and Terrible Lie..although widley played still don't lose their appeal.'Some Thing I Can Never Have' Is my favourite NIN Track of All.Okay it's probably the least Heaviest NIN Song and the Most Simple but it's beautifully put together and the lyrics put with Trents Voice is just heart-throbingly good.John Lennon Proved it with Imagine...The Simpler The Song The Bigger The Appeal..
