- Disappointing.
I found this record somewhat of a let down. On the basis The Cult's reputation and stuff I'd heard before, I bought it on impulse.
The first track "War (The Process)" made me smile. However, the remaining songs had cringe-inducingly corny lyrics ("Nico" was the worst offender) and generally bored me.
Sorry, guys.

- lumphammer rifforama ala Sonic Temple period
Well, yes, this is a great ROCK album in a similar vein to Sonic Temple and Ceremony. War and American Gothic swing with midtempo lumphammer dynamism.Take the Power and Speed of Light (aka Black California) are awesome chunks of heavy rock energy. But this album lacks the personal lyrics and the diversity of their last The Cult album, which, with Love are me favourites. This is music for American fans, and I prefer Ian and Billy when they're more adventurous.

- The more you listen the better it gets.
Although The Cult are unlikely to ever again produce an album as virtually perfect as LOVE they continue to write excellent songs. With Beyond Good and Evil they have cemented their place in the rock scene following on from ELECTRIC and SONIC TEMPLE. There is a hard edge to many of the songs on this album which is refreshingly raw rather than overly polished. The highlights at first listening are WAR, RISE, TAKE THE POWER, SHAPE THE SKY and TRUE BELIEVERS but as is the case with much work of The Cult other songs come into their own the more you listen. Ian Astbury is back to his powerful best whilst Billy Duffy once again laces the tracks with just the right guitar work. Ultimaltely this album proves once again what a talented writing team Astbury and Duffy are. - Mark Ellershaw

- The Cult Are Back To Save Rock!
That's right. They're back to save the world from MTV ladyboy rock. I'll admit my expectations for this new album were high - but they were exceeded within the first 30 seconds. 'War' doesn't just come out of speakers, it explodes like a scud missile. The riff is awesome, the drums are punishing and Ian is in top form with lyrics like 'Get the head your soul needs'. Incredible! And they do not let up the pace for the rest of the album, even the 'ballad' Nico has a kick-ass riff surging behind it. The tone of the album is angry and insistent but unlike many young rock acts, it's not just whining at the world. The Cult demand a spiritual war against the forces of evil. Which side are you on? This is the album they always knew they could make. If you despair that REAL rock is dead then buy this. Now. Album of the year.

- GREAT BRITISH ROCK
They are back, need I say more. Powerful riffs and Astbury's vocals do justice to the record proving he can produce the melody and feeling for what has to be the best ROCK album to date. Thundering in with WAR(the process) through great tracks like RISE and SHAPE TH SKY which has to be the next single. Buy it. It gets better each time you listen to it like when you watch your favourate movie over and over but each time you find something different that you missed before. Pump Up the volume and let shake the ground around you.
