- Not bad......let's hope 'Start Something' eclipses this!
Right, I won't deny I've had this album for more than 2 years, so I think I'm gonna write a review finally!
This album, to be fair, is samey. There are some fantastic tracks, like 'For Sure' and 'A Thousand Apologies', but some dreadful ones like 'Kobrakai' and 'Still Laughing'.
However, hopefully they have saved the best tunes for last, because judging by what I've heard of 'Start Something', it looks like 'The Fake Sound Of Progress' is going to be destroyed forever.

- A must have album...
Born out of 6 disgruntled youths in the bleak Welsh Valleys. A full of passion, anti-authoritarian view of youth conveyed through meldoic tunes and crushing guitars, soaring vocals meets angst ridden screams.
Tracks such as Kobrakai, Shinobi Vs. Dragonninja and Fake Sound of Progress some of the best metal material ever recorded... Though do not despair; not another album with a few good songs, all 11 are hugely powerfull tracks! A must buy for all true metal fans!

- Well, at least they're trying!
Finally, a British act who have the balls / stupidity to challenge the Yanks in the nu-metal market. they may be named after a Duran Duran song, but Lostprophets are going to try and earn some street cred anyway in the already saturated nu-metal world. Fake Sound of Progress was always going to be an instant hit in the UK, but the States is the real barometer of success for nu-metallers these days, so thankfully Lostprophets got a slot on the side stage of this year's US Ozzfest. They need to polish up thier live act if they are to challenge the likes of Hoobastank, Incubus or Limp Bizkit though. However, judging from their debut album, they certainly can produce the goods. Opening track (and the most famous to date) Shinobi Vs Dragon Ninja is catchier and more musically accomplished than anything the likes of P.O.D and Adema have released so far, and although the rest of the album doesnt quite live up to the same standard it has its' moments. "Still Laughing" would be a sure-fire hit in the same vein as Hoobastank's "Crawling In The Dark" if it were released as a single, in that it is powerful and emotional with a memorable riff behind it, and "For Sure" is a wonderfully upbeat pick-me-up. Unfortunately the rest of the album sort of blends in together, you know, like all Green Day songs do when you've listened to them for too long, and that hinders it's overall quality. The scrathcing on the record is very impressive, as is the guitar playing, unfortuntely it all sounds too similar; the Lostprophets will be a hit when they can come up with a truly stand-out tune, in the way Limp Bizkit did with Break Stuff, and Nickelback with How You Remind Me. Mind you, System Of A Down got their first break on an Ozzfest side stage and look what happened to them...... :)

- There's life in the old dog yet!
Like previous reviews have said, it takes a band with a lot of confidence (sometimes stupidity) to try to take on the US bands in the unimaginatively titled "nu-metal" genre.
Lostprophets have tried, and have come pretty damn close to succeeding.
OK, their live performances are not of the top drawer, but give them time and that will change. But when it comes down to the quality of music on the CD they are pretty near faultless.
Easily switching between well sung melodies to huge booming riffs and bellowing vocals. There's songs here to grab you by the short and curlies, but equally songs here that make you appreciate the musical talent of the band.
Hopefully this band will stay on top of their wave for a long while yet, and not bail like so many promising British bands of the past.

- not impressive.
shinobi vs. dragon ninja was a huge hit, as many can agree, and I for one hoped that it would set the standard for the whole album. How wrong I was. this album is disappointing, and offers little in the way of music that's simply listen-to-able. I have found 4 good songs on it (the first two, 8 and 9) but i can appreciate kobrakai (5) as being a god track too. However, when laced with purely irritating tracks like awkward, this album is only for die hard fans, not just trendies who reckon it's cool to own an album by this group. want nu-gen metal? go for linkin park instead.
