- The best in the series (CD1)
Got to be the most consistent of the series, although I have only the EZ mix, which I am greatly impressed by, as the tracks seem to blend into each other quite nicely and doesn't interupt the flow of the set. Seems like the track selection has been wisely spent, picking tracks that go with the flow and not just thrown together as previous outings!

Im not a big fan of this 4x4 Garage as to me it sounds like rubbish and all the same. But the reason i bought this was for the Todds Edwards cd as this how Garage music should sound.
i've been into garage since the early days when it was soulful and very uplifting. then in 96 i like the Speed Garage then we had the boom in 4x4 Garage with So solid Crew, Ez ect ect.
cd 1 has some really rubbish tracks that more like noise then music but there are a few good old skool choonz and the MJ Cole track is excellent too.
Cd 2 well for me this gets 5 starts but its such a shame that this came in 2cd set. All the tracks on this cd are so soulful and very uplifting.
there are some old fav T Edwards productions which have been rmxed just for the cd and there tracks that Todd has rmxed too. all round good stuff.
in my opnion they should get rid of Ez as the Garage scene is going crap and just like Mr edwards do the cds now.
if you like the cd 1 then i dob't what artists to try buit if you enjoyed cd 2 try stuff by MJ Cole, Tuff Jam, Booker T or the other Todd cds

- downhill.....
i have to disagree with everyone im afraid but someone must agree with me that this album is a big let down when compared to the previous pure garage compilations. I looked forward to buying this, then put it on in the car and was disappointed. The tracks are bleek and nothing stands out. The Todd Edwards mix is like listening to the same song 21 times over....but then i never did like his previous tracks on the pure garage cds.....maybe its just my style my i really dont like this cd...having said that i will be sure to buy any future releases of pure garage....lets hope its better than this one.

- No Rewinds, Just Good Memories
DJ EZ and Todd Edwards have both been in the game longer than I care to remeber, Todd mixing up smashed up vocals and EZ playing more of a two step flava, which is cool. This time, the guys have decided to go for the more upbeat garage, 4 to the floor beats, messed up R&B vocals and no sign of dodgy commercial garage, something which I admire of EZ, Todd and the record company.
CD1 is EZ' mix, which is focused on skippy 4 to the floor beats, hard basslines and funky keybaords. Some hot moments include CJ Bolland's "sugar is sweeter", with it's muffled vocals and Armand's classic garage remixing style; big beats and hard basslines and repeating segments of the vocal. Zach Tom's more vocal offering "Don't bring me down", EZ's own "hard 4/4 for you", with it's pounding beats; and of course Double 99's club smash, RIP Groove, with it's excellent bassline and jump up vocals. If this doesn't have you up and dancing, you've obviously missed the point. Of course, there's the excellent Smokin' Beats with the bass driven "dreams", a sort of cool funky synth cut you couldn't not play on a garage classics mix. Also, my favourite of all time is here: TJR Featuring the brilliant vocals of Xavier, and "Just Gets Better", and it's funky stabs and beats.... amazing.
CD2 is Todd Edwards mix, which is more jumbled vocals, 4 to the floor pounding beats and funky pads. He's thrown a lot of his own work in the mix, which is very cool, like his take on St Germain's "Alabama Blues", with it's country feel with chopped up and thrown in one sample feel. Other great Todd Edwards moments include "Shut That Door", "Perfect Love", "Restless Soul" and "The Dream", all with his personalised style of remixing and making his own beats. Nice stuff too from The Beloved, Somore, Moloko, The Jam Experience, The Nightcrawlers and Wildchild. The mix is electric, with many jump up moments. His mix is definately not boring.
This is an excellent compiation, I had started to believe garage was going down the banks, how wrong was I? I'm fed up of new gangster garage and all this new commercial garage which is killing the scene, so to see EZ and Todd Edwards doing a rewind on less commercial garage I was very happy indeed. EZ's mix is amazing, but Todd's is very personal, which is nice to see these days, as many compilations don't hold a light to this one. The fact there's no annoying MC will please many people, but might get right up purist garage fan's noses. It's definately one of the weekend, and it's definately one for the big garage fan, so get this if you love this music.

- Don't let the name "garage" put you off
At last, a commercially available 4x4 album hits the shelves! Don't let the name "garage" put you off, this is a far cry from the grimey beats that have put so many people off the genre. For those who don't know what to expect, this album is full of upbeat kinda housey music (think MJ Cole's Wonderin Why). For those who know what to expect you the album doesn't disappoint with a mix of old and new, superbly mixed by EZ and Edwards. The vocal chopping by edwards on cd 2 is simply sublime and even though almost every track on the cd is his own work it doesn't become tedious.
If you're looking for something new, this is definitely for you. Superb value! It's about time this genre got the recognition it deserves.
