A considerable improvement on earlier versions but I feel it could be more user friendly.

I purchased this after review of Amazon comments. Initially I was looking for some software to plot the kings and queens of England, not becuase they're related to me but as history books never have the detail one wishes, too much or too little. This software can do that job.
Having some family tree already recorded by an elderly aunt I set about putting this on the software. It was easy to get started, and is a quite powerful tool. For example a reference can be added to almost every piece of data. This can be very valuable as old records often do not match and knowing what is correct and what is an estimate is helpful. Pictures and media can be uploaded and connected. As BMD info is available to down load as .pdf files these visual records can easily be incorporated into the tree. The print options are not a strong point. There are many options but getting the output you want may not be possible. I've ended up splitting the tree into four files so that I can follow easily the line of one parent. Once you get to around 100 family members keeping track of where you are can be quite complex. The main view is down a single line. I've not worked out how to display multiple siblings, with out returning to the parent and on to the next sibling. I've found it helpful to put maiden names in for ladies, but did not know that at the start and wasted time re keying data. The software will take complex situations one man, several wives, numerous off spring by both for example. There is a todo list which is helpful to remind one what needs investigation. For what is does the software is good value. I did buy it expecting 3 months access to Ancestry but when the software was intalled only 2 weeks was available for trial. Having looked around the internet a lot of information is availble free, however most packages sign you up to a years subsciption, or are credit based with the credits going really quickly as the free access data is not detailed enough. It's like printers for pc the base price is good but then the ink is over priced. The history hunting can be addictive and Ancestry is always there trying to temp you into subscribing. If you're considering this as a good hobby for the dark winter evenings, then prepare to part with more cash than the cost of the software.

Good product easy to get on with, limit to what you can seach for unless you want to start paying for it, the 3 month you get for a free search is not long enough, other than that I am quite happy with it as I have found a lot of family that I did not know I had got? some interesting and some not so.
Overall good product just wish I had a bit more money to delve a bit further.

Rating: - Family Tree Maker 2009 vs 2006

I was very disappointed to find that not only was FTM 2009 more complicated and slower to use than FTM 2006, but also many of the menu items, options (e.g. change to married names in the index) and reports (e.g. multiple pages per month in the calender report) that were available in FTM 2006 were not available in FTM 2009, and so I have reverted to FTM 2006.

I finally upgraded b/c I finally got a new computer. This new software has a lot of bells and whistles, but is not as intuitive to use as the older versions. I have also been using the online version of Ancestry's Family Tree via my subscription to that site, and really like that interface. I wish, since both were developed by the same company, that they could be more similar in design, use, and function. That being said, this is an excellent product that handles enormous amounts of data and allows you "go the whole hog" by inputing anything you can think of, or to just do the minimum to track your tree. The customer support is also good.
