Editorial Reviews

This 1956 pop adaptation of Shakespeare's The Tempest is one of the best, most influential science fiction movies ever made. Its space explorers are the models for the crew of Star Trek's Enterprise, and the film's robot is clearly the prototype for Robby in Lost in Space. Walter Pidgeon is the Prospero figure, presiding over a paradisiacal world with his lovely young daughter and their servile droid. When the crew of a spaceship lands on the planet, they become aware of a sinister invisible force that threatens to destroy them. Great special effects and a bizarre electronic score help make Forbidden Planet as fresh, imaginative and fun as it was when first released.

Rating: 5 of out 5 - this is perfection i give it 20 stars

in my humble view this is about as perfect as you can get , for its time and era it was so good, this has been remastered and cleaned up alot and the differnece is amazing, play it on a big screen and it looks fantastic, yes i know the acting is a bit iffy but who cares , as a whole this is one hell of a film, it scared the pants off me when i first saw it on telly, (black and white) and the soundtrack when the idd monsters footprints walk across the ground in front of the ship and up the stairs gave me nightmares for years, try it on a big screen with the advanced sound we have now and it still has the power to make my artm hairs stand on end , this is a must for any sci collection

update update !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

have a read in this months (feb) copy of sci fi now magazine, this was voted the best sci fi movie ever, its nice to know there are people with taste out there

regards to all

Rating: 4 of out 5 - Of its time...

This is a great movie. I've loved it for years and the opportunity to own it on DVD was too good to miss. Yes, the dialogue reflects the time the movie was made, especially the 'social norms' but that doesn't really detract from the overall movie experience. I would love to see this in the cinema!

Rating: 5 of out 5 - That was and still is a classic!

Old movie perhaps, but with a great story which inspired the famous Star Trek serie.

I am 32 and I cannot imagine how it should have been new to people from the 50's, who were used to 'indians and cowboys movies' to discover Altair 4, a space saucer, and, of course, Robby: the star of the movie for me.

I really like that Robby, because it complies with the 3 laws of robotics invented by I. Asimov.

Rating: 5 of out 5 - A Brilliant Classic

I'm not a movie buff. No big or mysterious words here.

This film is a perfect example of the classic SCIFI creation. It is short on bells and whistles and long on thought. The true SCIFI fan will immediately recognise that what is being said is clearer and more profound than what we get from 99.999% of modern Hollywood blockbuster bunk "SCIFI".

It is both sad and refreshing to watch. Sad to consider how we have spun our wheels and slid backward for over half a century of SCIFI film making. Refreshing because it reminds us once again that most great works are about crisp clear ideas, the legacies of which are unrelated to short-term bucket loads of money and mindless marketing.

Rating: 4 of out 5 - Forbidden Planet a sci-fi classic film/

Forbidden Planet is a classic sci-fi film. It has been said that the film is losely based on the Tempest by William Shakespeare, and there are similarties, but these should not put anyone off. Forbidden Planet is purely a sci-fi film. The story begin with a spaceship traveling to a distant planet on a mission to rescue the crew of an earlier expedition. Apart from a scientist and his daughter all the rest of the earlier expedition have been killed by an unknown deadly force. Before long the rescue ship's crew begin to die violent deaths.
Robby the robot, who stars in this film went on to appear in another sci-fi classic Lost in space.
