- Essential viewing.
Much better than its sequal, Manhunter is for every horror, film, or life fan. Brilliantly filmed, magnificently acted (Brian Cox is better than Anthony Hopkins), and directed with skill. It is frightening and thrilling, but thought provoking. it's plausible too, and one of its main strengths its analysis of sick people, confused people, frightened people and voyeristic people. Disturbing it may be, but it is never gratuitously violent, and Michael Mann's film is less a Hollywood film than its sequal and more concerned with being itself. One of my faves.

- Genuinely chilling journey through the mind of a madman.
Manhunter is most likely the definative serial killer movie.
Before 'Se7en', 'American Psycho' or its' sequel, 'Silence of the Lambs', this film gets inside the mind of a killer. It does this by focusing on the charater Will Graham, played to perfection by William Peterson, a FBI agent called in to advise on the case of a serial killer known in the media as "The Tooth Fairy".
Graham was the agent responsible for the capture of famed sociapath Hannibal "the Cannibal" Lecter, and it is to Lecter he turns to help him get his mind in gear to find the tooth fairy.
Amazing performances from Brian Cox as Lecter and Peterson make this film great. Needless to say Michael Manns' direction is sleek, dark and atmospheric. No faults from me....hope you enjoy it.

- This film is one of the most disturbing films ever!
This is a prequel to "The Silence of the lambs" and it features a more mannered and yet some what more disturbed "Lecter". This film follows "Will Graham" as he searches through the thought patterns of a brutal and seemingly unstoppable serial killer who is mockingly known as "The tooth fairy". Expertly directed by Micheal Mann (Who recently made the oscar nominated "The Insider"), the film is a detailed adaptation of the novel "Red Dragon" by celabrated writer Tomas Harris.
This film is difficult to watch as it is more violent than its sequal. There are scenes in the film which are very disturbing to the eye and the mind. Although the film misses vital background information that the book describes in vivid detail, the viewer is still given a ride into the insane mind of a man who is quite obviously very unwell!
I would urge anyone to take this film home with them, lock all the doors and turn off all the lights to get the full effect of what is one of the most disturbing films ever...

- The definitive Michael Mann experience!
Make no mistake: Manhunter is a classic film, from Michael Mann (Miami Vice)- who went on to also write and direct The Last of the Mohicans, HEAT and now The Insider.
The film is based on the Thomas Harris novel 'Red Dragon' and therefore presents us with the first ever on-screen incarnation of Dr. Hannibal 'The Cannibal' Lecter. Forget the Oscar winning Hopkins performance - Brian Cox provides a more subtle, yet overall more accurate and -crucially- chilling portrayal of the (mad)man.
The beautiful, crisp visuals - a joint effort between Mann and cinematographer Dante Spinotti - and an awesome, powerhouse of a soundtrack (as with all of Michael Mann's work) make this essential viewing.
Why only 4 stars then? Well, this is a 'bare-bones' DVD if ever there was one, and beyond the widescreen ratio and scene access you'll find nothing in the way of 'special' features, which is a shame.
Nevermind - the movie is a 5 star affair, so I say buy this DVD today!
