Average rating - 5.0 out of 5

Rating: 5 of out 5 - Stunning!

Buffy Season 5 is brilliant, witty, and moving, and the THE GIFT, the centennial episode which concludes the season, is devastating. For fans of James Marsters and his portrayal of Spike, this season brings particular delights, as the character steers his beguiling way between tragedy and comedy. Some of the 'Spike' moments will bring tears to the eyes--real oooh---aaah stuff ( there is the business with the flowers in Forever, and his interchanges with Buffy in Intervention and The Gift, for example--so much subtext!) Difficult to see how the promised Season 6 can match this, but no doubt Joss Whedon has even more suprises up his sleeve.

Rating: 5 of out 5 - Buffy's back on form....

After the disappointment that was the 4th season (every show's gotta have a weak season...), we finally see the show we know and love back on form. It's a good season for 'minor' characters as well, with Spike Xander and Giles finally getting some serious (and in places quite moving)screen time. If you have any compassion in your soul, you'll weep through the last few episodes though. Season six can't come too soon after this. buy it....

Rating: 5 of out 5 - Superb mix of drama & fun - Buffy has reached its maturity

Season 5 of Buffy is perhaps the best yet. This second half focuses almost entirely on the main story arcs of the year, with virtually no 'filler' episodes. With the exception of the lamentable "Crush", every one is Buffy at its classic best.

Be prepared for some heart-rending developments. Dawn's discovery of who she really is, the death of a major character in "The Body" and the epic five-part run-up to the finale all make for powerful television. Compared to this, I found the much-hyped ending slightly contrived at first, but it has grown on me during repeat viewings. If you don't know what happens, brace yourself for a shock.

With such heavy drama, some light-hearted fun needs injecting into the proceedings, and this is provided admirably by Glory. The brain-sucking devil-in-a-dress proves herself to be the best baddie to appear on the scene since Spike and Dru first rolled into Sunnydale. Speaking of the Big Bad, Spike has some great scenes with Dawn, and his crush on Buffy (whilst a questionable idea for a plot line) is handled much better here than in the first half of the season.

What this set demonstrates most of all is the maturity of the series. This is an altogether more confident Buffy, unafraid to handle difficult issues and mixing serious drama with comedy and gloriously (excuse the pun!) epic action. Great stunts and effects, top-notch acting all round (special mention for newcomer Michelle Trachtenberg), and gripping story lines. A winner on every level.

Rating: 5 of out 5 - Buffy is Back!!!

Series 4 lost it a bit, but with the addition of Dawn Series 5 is stronger than ever! There is the usual, drama, comedy and the usual Joss Whedon twists. The final eposide is suprising and very touching, as is the eposide 'The Body'. This is Buffy at her best, and is a must have for all fans of Buffy, as well as people new to it.

Rating: 5 of out 5 - The best season of Buffy ever.

This is a fairly grand statement to make but an accurate one. So many subtle hints are littered throught, playing with our emotions and knowledge of everything that makes 'Buffy' so that when the end does come - unexpected and painful on some level you KNOW that this was going to be the only way that it could end. How they are going to top this in terms of storylines and direction I don't know but I can't wait. As usual Spike is faultless with Anya and Xander providing the humour in what is probably the darkest and most intense season yet. Buffy fans- miss even one minute at your peril.
